Agility

GWENDOLYN W. WILLIAMSDirectorSupply Chain Services

It’s that time of year again—setting goals and resolutions for the New Year and reflecting on last year’s progress. Of course, due to life events and lapsed commitments, the look-back and look-ahead might be challenging. One thing we know for sure as we enter 2017—if we want to stay in the mix and ahead of the curve, we must be agile. Athletes understand this. Business leaders preach it. Our LADWP linemen live by it. The veterans who were the focus of this year’s small business academy survived because of it. Maintaining balance, strength, speed, and control are requisites.

Today’s rapidly changing environment consists of non-stop technology changes and rising customer expectations. Constant innovation, whose companion is often disruption, displaces markets and long established methodologies in the blink of an eye. Agility in the business world requires alertness, accessibility, decisiveness, and flexibility, but it’s no easy feat in organizations, which by their very nature are often structured for conformance. So how do we get there? Is there an agility “how-to?”

Atul Gawande, acclaimed surgeon, writer and executive director of a joint center for health systems innovation, champions the checklist as a method to keep us agile. In his book, The Checklist Manifesto, he contends well-designed checklists can improve outcomes in our complex world and that “checklists seem lowly and simplistic but they fill in for the gaps in our brains and between our brains.” Makes sense to me. I use them every

day. There’s probably an agility “app” somewhere but here’s a checklist that I’ve come up with that may help with goals and resolutions for your business in the New Year. It may not be the one that fits for you but that’s where agility comes in. Add, delete or modify to make it work for you and your organization.

• Are you alert and able to quickly detect changes, opportunities and threats? Do you anticipate, watch, look, and listen? Are you keeping up with evolving requirements?

• Can you quickly access information in order to coordinate and execute your business strategy? Do you have a data retrieval platform available to all members on your team that is readily available to allow you to leverage information?

• Is the speed of your decision-making process effective? When it’s critical can you take the information that is available to you at the time and move on it decisively, or are you bogged down with procedural obstacles and non-value added layers for approval?

• What flexibility do you have to modify tactics and operations to implement a strategy when needed? Is scaling up to respond to escalated need or an emergency in your tool kit?

I’m going to use checklists for two of my resolutions for the New Year, improved health and organizational performance. One starts with using my gym membership and the other with clarifying Supply Chain’s goals and priorities. So I can rock with all the rolls with agility. Happy New Year!

2016 LA SMALL BUSINESS ACADEMY ACADEMY HIGHLIGHTS

ADP ENGINEERING LLC

ADP Engineering specializes in the sales and service of industrial pumps, valves, compressors, and centrifuges. Above all else, ADP is

a veteran-owned business, with more than half of its workforce listed as veterans and/or retired military. ADP also carries small and local business certifications.

ADP was formed in 2015 by an all-star group of industry professionals. The supply and support ability of the pump industry was faltering, and ADP sought to correct that issue. Now, as the exclusive California distributor of industrial and engineered water solutions for Sulzer Pumps, ADP is bringing top shelf products and industry expertise back to the industry.

Thanks to that expertise, ADP is now consulting with the Metropolitan Water District to develop specifications for the replacement of more than 50 vertical turbine pumps on the Colorado Aqueduct - one of the main arteries of water feeding into southern California.

ADP also provides products and services to industry titans such as Chevron, Kimberly Clark, Campbell Soup Co., and Nestlé. They also specialize in wastewater treatment by supplying submersible pumps and aeration equipment to municipalities and industry. ADP is also an important supplier to desalination and reverse osmosis companies. Forget solar—desalination and reverse osmosis are the wave of the future!

The principals of ADP Engineering are graduates of the Los Angeles Small Business Academy, and are excited to participate in the planned $15-billion repair, growth and upgrade of infrastructure in the city of Los Angeles over the next decade.
