ideas as well as learn coping mechanisms for their ongoing challenges. Members of

our professional staff facilitate the support group meeting with community speakers

lending their expertise on successful and safe living after amputation.

• No cost to join or attend – open to the community – all are welcome.

• Meeting takes place in the classroom at Summa Rehab Hospital the last

Thursday of every month from 1 - 2:00 p.m.

• Group led by Dr. Torcasio, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist with 30

years experience.

• Support group attendees can expect to receive opportunities to discuss

experiences and concerns in a supportive setting as well as healthy coping

strategies to improve quality of life.

PROSTHETIC TRAINING FOR NEW OR UPGRADED DEVICES

• Patients can be admitted to Summa Rehab Hospital for about 4-5 days on average

• 15 hours per week of intensive therapy and safety training.

• Wound monitoring and pain monitoring along with 24/7 nursing care.

• Full medical management by our PM&R and hospitalist physicians to help keep patients

on track while learning to use their new or upgraded device.

their independence.

NEW AMPUTEE PATIENTS

Patients come to Summa Rehab Hospital for inpatient physical rehabilitation

after their initial amputation.

Patients receive specialty physician oversight and pain management as well as

15 hours of physical and occupational therapy every week. Wound monitoring,

device training, fitment from prosthetists and 24/7 nursing care with education

and guidance on how to move on with their lives. New prosthetic devices

normally take 7-8 weeks to create, so this short inpatient stay focuses on safety

training and therapies to prepare the patient for challenges they will face when

they go home until those devices are ready. This inpatient stay ranges from

10-14 days on average.
