SULPHUR AS A NUTRIENTImportance of SulphurSulphur is essential to plantsfor amino acid, vitamin, enzyme, and protein production.Adequate sulphur availabilityimproves crops utilisation ofother essential nutrients, mostnotably nitrogen. Crop sulphurdeficiency reduces yield andquality. Crop yield losses of 10%can occur before the onset ofvisible symptoms. Until recentlya major part of a crop’s sulphurrequirement was met byatmospheric deposition. Asatmospheric pollution is reduceddue to clean air policies, no partof the UK will receive more than8kg/ha sulphur as depositions. Brimstone 90 90% sulphur (225% SO3) fertiliser and soil amender Uniform, free flowing and dust free granule Suitable for blending with other fertilisers Season long source of sulphur Reduced losses to the environment compared to other sulphur fertilisers Trials have show Brimstone 90 to have the smallest particle size of any sulphur product on the market. This enables Brimstone 90 to become more quickly available to the plant when it's needed most.

RecommendationsSulphur is now recognised as amacro-nutrient, and is requiredby plants in similar amounts tophosphorus.Sulphur is relatively immobile inplants, therefore is requiredthroughout crop growth inadequate quantities.Levels of sulphur deficiency aredependant on location and soiltype. With Brimstone 90 you can beflexible with application rates tomatch crop requirement.

Typical application rates:Oilseed Rape 35-45kg/haCereals & Peas 20kg/haGrassland up to 50kg/ha

Application & TimingBrimstone 90 can be spread to24m with a fertiliser spreader(calibration tables available).Brimstone 90 can be appliedanytime of the year, to achievethe greatest yield and qualityresponses apply betweenSeptember and February.Elemental sulphur doesn’t leach;trials have shown leachinglosses from ammonium sulphateto be as high as 70%.

EconomicsBrimstone 90 is not subject tohuge price fluctuations we seein other fertiliser products. The cost of a Brimstone 90application can be recoveredby minor yield increases.Considerable savings can bemade by sourcing straightnitrogen and Brimstone 90over compound products.

SULPHUR RECOMMENDATIONS

CerealsSulphur is important in protein production and grain quality. Millingwheats and all cereals grown on light and medium soils shouldreceive 20kg/ha Brimstone 90 (45kg SO3). First feed wheats andfeed barleys grown on heavy and organic soils where Brimstone 90is applied at recommended rates throughout the rotation are unlikelyto give an economic benefit to sulphur applications.

GrasslandGrass and grass/clover swards require significant amounts ofsulphur for maximum production. Deficiency symptoms canincreasingly be seen in grassland and cause large yieldreductions, whilst impairing quality. Apply 20kg/ha of Brimstone90 (45kg/ha SO3) for each planned hay or silage cut at the onsetof spring growth.

PeasPeas require a large amount of sulphur because of their high protein content.Sulphur deficiency can be a limiting factor in the nitrogen fixation process, which can affect the productivity of following crops too. Pea yield losses fromsulphur deficiency can easily be in excess of 20%, whilst quality can also beseriously affected (Dr Zhao, Rothamsted). Peas grown on light and mediumsoils require 20kg/ha of Brimstone 90 (45kg SO3) applied just prior to drilling.Provided sulphur is applied at recommended rates throughout the rotation onheavy and organic soils there is unlikely to be an economic benefit fromsulphur applications.

Winter Oilseed RapeAll winter oilseed rape crops should be routinely treated with sulphur. When deficiencies occur yield penalties can be severe. Sulphur isalso very important in the synthesis of oil in oilseed rape. On lightand medium soils apply 45kg/ha of Brimstone 90 (100kg SO3) andon heavy and organic soils apply 35kg/ha (80kg SO3).

Using Brimstone 90Brimstone 90 is a straight90% elemental sulphur whichallows you to be fully flexiblewith dose rates.Fertiliser spreader calibrationtables are available. The application window formost situations is betweenSeptember and February.Remember to account forsulphur applied in organicmanures.
