Suffixes When -able and -ible are added to words it generally means

'capable of being'

• able: There are more words ending in -able (about 900)

• -able words usually come from French. We can make new adjectives - networkable, childproofable.

• Ible: than -ible (less than 200).

• -ible words come from Latin. There are no new Latin words!

• capable of receiving sensory impressions

washable

• able to be washed without being damaged

available

• easy or possible to get or use

fashionable

• dressing and acting in a way that is currently popular

valuable

• worth a lot of money

flexible

• capable of bending or being bent

reasonable

• being in accordance with reason

• showing approval

breakable

• able to be broken

convertible

• able to be changed into another form

forgettable

• not worth remembering

laughable

• causing or likely to cause laughter or scorn
