The ultimate aim of horror movies is to play on an audiences fears and to create an undesirable emotional reaction, this is the main common feature within horror movies however each subgenre contains its own codes and conventions. This presentation will cover just a few of the most popular sub genres within horror.

Supernatural horror films include anything that you can't find in the real world, such as; monsters, zombies, vampires, ghosts and dark forces.

Gore porn (also known as splatterpunk) are the most graphic horror and also quite exploitative.

Psychological horror focuses less on gore and focuses more on suspense and tricking the spectator. They'll most commonly end with a dramatic twist.

Satanic, religious and occult horror mainly focus on demonic possession or exorcisms.

Suspense and thrillers do not involve any supernatural or unearthly features, but instead depends on realistic situations to create horror through serial killers, near death experiences and natural disasters.

Sci-fi horror include aliens, robots and time travel. Often they have overlaps with other horror genre.

Gothic horror contains psychological and visceral terror in historically romantic settings.
