Strategies for Success Workshop Degrees, Wednesday May 17th 19:00-20:30 You do not need to register for this event The now annual Strategies for Success Workshop will be held on Wednesday May 17th, 2017 at 7:00pm at Degrees. Students and Post-docs are invited to meet with our assembled experts to discuss the strategies for professional development both within and outside of academia. Although the advice is serious, the event is casual. Students should feel free to move from station to station as they wish, and partake in the friendly discussion. Presentation tips Let’sfaceit–oralpresentationscanbenerve‐wracking!Whetherthisisyourfirstconferencepresentationoryou’reold‐hatatitbynow,thosebutterfliesalwaysseemtocreepinjustbeforethechaircallsyoutothefrontoftheroom.Tohelpcalmthosenervesandkeepyoufeelingconfident,hereareafewtipsforpreparingagreatpresentation:

1. Visuals:APowerpointpresentationisavisualpresentation,sotakefulladvantageofpictures,diagrams,andgraphs!Toomuchtextonaslideisvisuallyunappealing,andcancauseyoutoloseyouraudienceastheytryandreadthroughyourparagraphs.

2. Pace:Takeadeepbreathbeforeyoubegin,andmakesureyoukeepbreathingduringyourpresentation!Rushingthroughapresentationisacommonresponsetobeingnervousandwantingtogetitover‐with;however,rememberthatyouraudienceistherebecausethey’reinterestedinwhatyouhavetosay.Yoursciencematters,soslowdownandgiveittheattentionitdeserves!

3. You’retheexpert:Thisisyourresearchandyouknowitbetterthananyoneelse;eventhoughProfessorHotShotissittinginthefrontrow,theymaynotbefamiliarwithaparticularsubjectarea,acronym,orjargon.Remembertospellitoutforyouraudience–explainitsimply,andyou’llkeepyouraudienceonpoint.

4. Tellastory:conferencesareawesomeandexciting,butalsotiring.Attheendoftheday,youraudiencemaybeabouttodriftoff,butyoucancapturetheirattentionagainwithyourawesomestudy.Thebestwaytodothisistotellastorywithyourpresentation.Guideyouraudiencethroughastoryline,keepitflowing,andmakesureeachslideleadstothenext.Trymakingaflow‐chartofyourstoryfirst,andthenfillinyourpresentationasyougo.Also,greatstoriesinsciencealwayshavecontext,sodon’tforgettotelluswhyitallmatters!

5. Throwdownyourarms:Youraudienceisgenerallygenuinelycuriousandinterestedinyourwork–they’renotouttomakeyoufeelstupidorshowyouupinthequestionperiod.Thus,don’tfeeltheneedtobedefensivewhenadifficultquestioncomesyourway.Instead,takeitasanopportunitytolearnsomething,oratleastseeyourresearchfromsomeoneelse’seyes.

6. Takeadvantageofthetimeyou’regiven:Youmayfeelthatyoucan’tfitallofyourresearchinto12‐15minutes,butgoingoveryourtimelimitisnotrecommended,andthisisagoldenopportunitytodistillyourresearchintoitsmostimportantparts.Avoidthetemptationtoexplaineverylittledetailthelasttwoyearsofresearchthatledtothis;instead,focusonthetake‐homemessage,andthenusewhatdatayouneedtoreachthatmessage.

Overall,remembertorelaxandhavefun!Thatmaybeeasiersaidthandone,butCSZisawelcomingandfriendlyenvironmentforitsstudentmembers,soyouareingoodhands!

Making the most of conferences Conferencearepackedfullofsymposia,contributedsessions,workshopsandsocials,whichcanhaveyourheadspinninginnotime.Therearealotofopportunitiespackedintoashortamountoftime,soherearesometipsonmakingthemostofyourconferenceexperience:

1. Takeinthesocialopportunities:conferencesarefullofcolleaguesandmentors,andyoushouldaimtospendtimewithboth.ThestudentsheremaybethesamepeopleyouseeatCSZ20yearsfromnow,soitpaystomakefriendsoutsideofyourlab.Startyourfriendshipsandtraditionsnow!Whenitcomestomentors,takefulladvantageofcatchingcoffee,lunch,ordinnerwiththatprofwhoseresearchyou’vebeenfawningover–moreoftenthannot,theyareexcitedtotalktonewstudents,andwillbehappytochatwithyou.

2. Don’tbeafraidtotalktoaresearchgiant:onthatvein,don’tfeelthatyouare“justastudent”andsomehownotworthyofsomeoneelse’stime.Ifyouareinterestedinmeetingsomeone,talkingtothemabouttheirresearch,orintroducingthemtoyours,feelfreetoapproachthem!It’snerve‐wracking,buteveryonehererememberswhatitwasliketobeastudentandaregenerallyhappytohearfromyou.

3. Talktoyourstudentcouncillors:thismaysoundlikeashamelessplug,butwe’rehonestlyhappytomeetandhearfromallofyou.Ifyouhaveanyideas,comments,orconcerns,pleasefeelfreetoapproachus!

4. Attendsymposiaandcontributedtalks:Theorganizedsymposiaarefullofaforementionedresearchgiantsandareagreatopportunitytohearaboutexcitingresearchthatmayormaynotberelatedtoyourfield.Intruth,youneverknowwhoseresearchmayjumpoutatyouasyournextbigthing,orinspireyoutopursueanewdirectioninyourcurrentresearch.

5. Balance:Nowthatyou’replanningontakinginasmanytalksandsocialeventsasyoucan,remembertotakesometimeforyourself.Youshouldleavetheconferencefeelinginspired,notcompletelyburnt‐out.Ifyouneedtotakeanunscheduledcoffeebreakorcatchanextra30minsofzzz’s,that’sfine‐dowhatyouneedtodotostayfreshandhappy.

Tips for being environmentally friendly during the conference TheCSZstudentcouncillorsstriveeachyeartoreduceenvironmentalimpactofourannualmeeting.Thisyearisnodifferent,andwehaveusedsomeourfundingtoinvestinBullfrogPower.BullfrogPowerwillmatchallthepowerusedatthe2017

meetingwithelectricityfromclean,andrenewableenergysources.Whilethiswilloffsetourcarbonfootprint,therearestillmanyotherthingswecandotokeepthisconferencegreen.Followthetipsbelowtojoinusinthiseffort!

1. Usealaptoporportabledevicethroughouttheconferencetoaccessthescheduleandotherresources.Usingdigitalresourceswillreducetheamountofpaperwasteandsaveourtrees.

2. Bringareusablewaterbottleandcoffeethermosinsteadofusingdisposable

bottlesandcups.

3. Ifyou’retravelingaroundtownorheadingbacktotheairport,besureto

carpoolorusepublictransit.

4. Recycle,recycle,andrecycle.It’seasytosettleforagarbagecanatabusy

event,butit’simportanttotaketheextrafewsecondstofindtheproperdisposal.
