Student As Producer Real World Research Projects

Elizabeth BruzasCareers and Employability Adviser

• January 2013- met at MMUK discuss University of Lincoln collaboration(Elizabeth Bruzas, Richard Allarton and Mike Poole)

• March 2014- Jason visited University to find out more about the School of Engineering and the Product Design course

• July 2014- MMUK took on Dean Parkin as a summer placement student

• September 2014- Collaborative Project between Engineering and Product Design began

• Future Projects: Research with School of Chemistry, Graduate Internships

Engineering Project Progress • Martin Manufacturing produce smoke and haze machines for

the entertainments industry.• They approached the School of Engineering to investigate the

properties of nozzle they had designed to produce haze droplets using water rather than traditional oils using a non-standard method of atomisation

• Whilst it appeared to work, they did not understand the theory behind the design and so had not optimised it

• A number of technical issues were also still to be resolved

• This seemed like a suitable project for 4th Year MEng students ……..

Experiments• Initial tests using Water- Slot and Hole orifice in

nozzle. Varied height + Air Pressure• Found that turbulence on fluid surface posed

problem with consistency of atomisation• Remedied using a larger fluid tank

Spray angle too wide in slot nozzle due to dimensions of orifice

Slot performed best for water

Experiments – Droplet Size

Experiments – Test 1

Experiments – Test 2

Experiments – Test 3

Results for Water. Spray seemed finer however it was clear hang time was a problem, Turbulence in water more prominent.

This setup first applied to glycerine however varied performance due to liquid properties.

Experiments – Test 4
