This is an example of a tensegrity (tensional integrity) structure whichbalances the forces between tension and compression.

Snelson was the first to exploittensegrity into art upon hearing lectures by Buckminster Fullerat Black Mountain College in1948.

The simplest tensegrity structure, with three three compression members. Each is symmetric with the other two, and symmetric from end to end. Each end is connected to three cables which provide compression and which precisely define the position of that end.

A similar structure with four compression members.
