ASK THE NURSE How do I know if I have a cold or the flu and can you get the flu from the flu shot?
You cannot get the flu from the flu shot. The vaccine is an inactivated vaccine which means it does not contain any live influenza virus.
When you wake up sneezing, coughing and have that achy feeling, it is important to know the difference between flu and cold symptoms. A cold is a milder respiratory illness that the flu. While cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days, flu symptoms can make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks. The flu can also result in serious health problems such as pneumonia.
Cold symptoms usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two. Nasal symptoms, runny nose and congestion follow, along with a cough by the fourth and fifth day. Fever is uncommon in adults but a slight fever is possible. Children are more likely to have a fever with a cold.
Flu symptoms are usually more severe than cold symptoms and come on quickly. Symptoms of flu include sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches and soreness, congestion and cough. Most flu symptoms gradually improve over two to five days but it is not uncommon to feel run down for a week or more. A common complication of the flu is pneumonia particularly in the young, elderly or people with lung or heart problems. If you notice shortness of breath let your doctor know.
Just like cold viruses, flu viruses enter your body through the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes or mouth. Every time you touch your hand to one of these areas, you could be infecting yourself with a virus, which makes it very important to keep hands germ free with frequent washing to prevent both flu and cold symptoms.
The best advice I can give, dear reader, is to get your flu shot and practice frequent hand washing. Now go have yourself a nice cup of soothing herbal tea. Chamomile is nice.
Peg Drummey, Stoneham Board of Health Nurse, answers your questions on health. To submit a question, check at the front desk or email StonehamSeniorCenter@gmail.com.
SHARPS CONTAINER If you need to dispose of needles or other medical sharp instruments, there is a designated medical sharps container located outside of the ladies’ room on the first floor.

NEW TAI CHI SERIESHelp your body work for you! Find pain relief, reduced stiffness, and a better quality of life through Tai Chi. Taught by certified instructor Susan Becker, our Tai Chi is based on the methods of Dr. Paul Lam. It is often described as “meditation in motion,” harmonizing body and mind by practicing slow continuous movement accompanied by deep breathing. There’s growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Our practice is gentle, requiring a small range of motion, and can be done standing or seated. All are welcome to this program sponsored by Mystic Valley Elder Services.
This class runs for eight weeks. No class over the holidays!
Tuesdays, 11/29 to 12/20; 1/10-1/31, 1-2PMThis class is an introduction to sun style Tai Chi. It’s perfect for beginning practitioners.
Wednesdays, 11/30-12/21; 1/11-2/1, 2:15-3:15PMContinue to practice Tai Chi and expand your knowledge of new forms. Some experience with Tai Chi is helpful for enjoyment of this class.

Thank you to the Monday Arts and Crafts Group for their generous donation.
Barn will re-open no later than 5/4/17, depending on weather and donations. Thank you for your support. Winter well.
GIVING TREEIn the lobby of the Senior Center stands a Giving Tree, the name taken from the Shel Silverstein book of the same name that tells the story of a tree which lovingly provides food, activity, shade, covering, and finally rest over the lifetime of the boy in the story as he grows. It represents a life that keeps on giving and is happy to do so, and we use that reminder as an opportunity for members and visitors to make a contribution that will be used to fund activities at the Center.
One family has used the Giving Tree four times. Once they placed a leaf in memory of a loved one. Once the leaf was in support of the Center. The final two were used to commemorate special events in the family. Every donation will support programs, services and operating expenses including repairs, maintenance and cleaning. Please consider giving a memorial or other sign of support by donating to the Giving Tree.
SUCCESSFUL 8TH SEASON OF BARGAIN BARN Once again the ‘barn babes’ and “bouys” worked diligently from April to early October taking in donations, cleaning them up and pricing them to sell quickly. The Friends’ Board is so grateful to all the volunteers and customers who participate on a weekly basis to make this the major fundraising effort of the year. Some of the proceeds will be going to a new sign out front.
