Exploratory Modeling of Steam Injected Gas Turbine
Nick Montes and David Llanos
System Schematic
Task
Model a Steam Injected Gas Turbine using thermodynamic principles
Determine the affect that steam injection has on system performance
Identify the components within the cycle that lead to highest exergy destruction
Results
Increasing the steam to air mass flow rate leads to higher efficiencies
Practically this could be unfeasible due to materials constraints on the turbine blades
Thermal Efficiency vs. Steam-Air mass flow ratio
Exergy is a measure of “useful energy” – energy available to do work
Majority of exergy is destroyed during the combustion process
Significant portion of exergy is also lost in exhaust
