•When discussing stereotypes we can discuss them in terms of conforming and subverting. What does that mean?

•Conform- to go with the existing rules.

•Subvert- to go against the existing rules.

Think: how can you apply the idea or conformity and subversion to the sixth form.

Think of a TV show.Can you think of a characters that conforms to

stereotypes and one that subverts?

Gender and TV - Recap• Gender representations and stereotyping is prevalent

throughout the media.

• Why is TV influential in the formation of stereotypes?

• TV is the most accessible form of the media and has the widest ‘reach’. Therefore it can be responsible for perpetuating stereotypes.

• For example, perhaps our cultural stereotypes of northern working class women is drawn from ‘Coronation Street’ or ‘Shameless’ and not from our personal understanding of the culture or region .

Stock TypesA stock character, which has universal appeal and is frequently copied in literature, television, radio and film.

• Task: Think of a stock type in the following:– An action movie.– A sitcom.– A gangster movie.

In soap operas these are ‘typical’ roles that can be seen across the

genre such as villain, gossip, tart etc.

• Read the article on feminism and post-feminism and consider the following questions:

– Can you think of any contemporary post-feminist icons?

– Do you think it is true to say that women today have the same opportunities as men?

• A label created by the media to describe the new man as being sensitive, caring and nurturing, not afraid to take an interest in his appearance.

• Men were staying single for longer and had more disposable income to spend on fashion and toiletries. The new man embraced feminism – accepting the role of father/husband.

• The women of the 1980’s wanted their men to be sensitive and caring and men’s magazines responded.
