Health and safety is taken very seriously these days; all very
different from a few decades ago, when now-standard
things like car seat belts were unknown (they became a
legal requirement in the 70s). When I was a child, stubbed
toes and cracked teeth were a rite of passage; now
playgrounds are carefully designed to minimise accidents.
In Britain, some regulations have been interpreted so
rigorously that UK tabloid newspapers mockingly refer to
‘elf and safety’, citing the banning of snowball fights and lolly
scrambles, office Christmas decorations, pin-the-tail on the
donkey, and hanging flower baskets.
Now British PM David Cameron has set up a Myth Busting
Panel to investigate some of these really silly decisions.
Fortunately our bureaucrats are far more sensible (so far!),
and our Health and Safety regulations play an important role
in preventing industrial and workplace accidents. Common
sense and personal responsibility still reign supreme in keeping
people safe, but employers
can help by providing the
correct protective apparel.
Wearing the right clothing
can save lives: simple things
like ‘High Vis’ vests that make
people stand out and look
smart. Arrow Uniform’s new
Workwear catalogue is packed
with good ideas – take a look!
Regards,
Des Ford
Wearing your trousers at the right length is an essential part of dressing smartly – too long, and the hems will fray, get really grubby and you’ll look sloppy; too short and you’ll look like a fast-growing schoolboy.

A few years ago, thieves entered Buckingham Palace ‘disguised’ in
safety vests. Their credentials weren’t questioned as it was assumed they
had security clearance. A similar thing happened at St James’ Palace.
Burglars dressed as workmen climbed a ladder into Prince Charles’
apartment and helped themselves to his cufflinks and tiepins.
That’s the problem with some work clothing! Wearers become
‘invisible’, which might be ideal for thieves, but is potentially fatal for
working near forklifts, on construction sites, on the road, and other
risky situations. As an employer it’s your responsibility to make sure your
staff are wearing clothing that maximise safety.
Talk to us - Stand out from the crowd with an Arrow Uniform.
HI-VIS HEIST
It’s a very clear sartorial rule: trousers should ‘break’ once on the shoe’s upper;
check it without wearing shoes – your trousers should just graze the floor (unless
you’re Nicholas Sarkozy, the former President of France who’s known for his love
of elevated shoes – and his considerably taller third wife, Carla Bruni).
It’s more complicated for women. Their love of different height shoes means
women have to commit to a length – the same pair of trousers can’t be worn
with ballet flats and stilettos. Women should always try on trousers with the
shoes they’re planning to wear with the outfit.
One thing rules, for both men and women. Trousers should cover the shoes, yet
allowing the shoes to peek through; it’s very flattering as it elongates the body.
If the entire shoe is on show, your trousers are too short.
Arrow Uniforms wants people to look their best, so we’ll happily hem trousers to
your exact length. Or you may like to wear cuffs – we’ll sort that too. If you’re
the type who likes to wear ‘em rolled up - always without socks, please!
- you’re on your own (a view your employer may well share).

At Arrow Uniforms we’re proud of our new Workwear range. This gear is carefully designed by New Zealanders for New Zealanders, so workers stand out in the crowd, bad weather and low light. They’re practical garments that look great, fit well, and are easy
care. Most important, these garments keep people safe and working
efficiently in all conditions. There’s wet weather gear for New Zealand’s
notoriously pluvial conditions; and High Vis reflective clothing to
keep your staff safe when it is hot as well as when its cold.
We can answer almost any workwear need. At Arrow we can
create a uniform unique to you with monograms and colours
to reinforce your corporate image. Special sizes can easily be
accommodated along with Teflon and stain release treatments
to make clothes easy to maintain. A successful team needs a
quality uniform — talk to us and we’ll make it a reality.
We know the regulations
• There are very specific new regulations around safety clothing.
Until now, High Vis vests had the same ‘belt and braces’ markings
front and back. Now, they need to have a specific amount of tape
to meet the new standards. Here are some examples, although
it’s vital you check out the specific requirements of your sector:
• Construction sites with limited public access: workers between
dawn and dusk must wear at least 0.2m High Vis material on
the front and back of their garments. Nightshift workers must
wear at least 0.2m of retro reflective tape. Day-night workers
must wear at least 0.2m High Vis material on the front and back
of their garments, plus at least 0.2m of retro reflective tape.
WE KNOW WORKWEAR
EVER WONdEREd WHy OVERALLS ARE uSuALLy BLuE?
• Road workers must wear a minimum of 0.6m Hi Vis material and
at least 0.2m of retro reflective tape. There are specific regulations
on colours, quality of fabric, and design. Once you’ve got the right
clothing, make sure your staff are wearing it properly: Transit NZ
stipulates that clothing must be worn ‘done up’ when worn on site.
At Arrow Uniforms we know all these rules. So talk to us about the
safety of your staff. We’re always delighted to discuss our workwear.
We can give you a new catalogue, and advise on your best choices.

It’s the best colour for hiding dirt and grease, so the wearer appears cleaner. And it’s why manual labourers are called ‘blue collar’ workers.
OuR WIdE RANGE OF CHEFWEARIn the 1980s chefs began to wear less traditional clothing;
some like to wear snazzy colours and designs, but in
traditional restaurants the classic white jacket prevails.
Arrow Uniforms cater for traditionalists, and those who like a
more contemporary look. Our Chef’s Wear catalogue has several
classic jacket options for men and women, in practical, modern,
Easy Care Polycotton that doesn’t shrink and doesn’t need much
ironing. We use the same Easy Care Polycotton in our stylish Le
Grande jacket, with its stylish contrast trim (available with short
or long sleeves) and our Royale jacket, which has black piping.
Chefs wanting a snazzier look should look at our black Zebra
jacket, with its check and pinstriped trim and shiny silver
buttons. Arrow Uniform’s Revival Modern jacket pulls on –
for those who don’t like buttons – with an enlarged
shoulder panel that makes movement easier.
We’ve got lots of hats: a contemporary twist on the classic
toque (the Tall Chef’s hat) and its disposable cousin, the Chef’s
Hat Roll (6m of cardboard that will make make approximately
12 hats), the Chef Revival flat top hat that comes in a check
option, or brushed cotton baseball caps in a range of colours.
Arrow Uniforms has the right look for you and your staff.

your requirements.

THE CHEF’S uNIFORM Everyone’s food mad these days, with new restaurants and cafés opening every day. It’s a consumer’s dream, but a tough and competitive environment for the owners.
Arrow Uniforms can help your business by ensuring your staff look their
best; we really understand the demands placed on clothing in kitchens and
restaurants. We’ve got something for everyone: classy and traditional for
executive chefs, modern for behind the scene workers in resthomes, and
always practical – and that’s paramount in the kitchen.
We can make anyone look terrific while cooking up a storm – not just chefs,
but even foodies wanting to emulate the chefs seen on TV. It’s one thing
to wow your friends with your cooking, but try ratcheting up your style by
wearing a chef’s jacket when manning the barbeque and top it off with a
traditional chef’s hat, the toque. You’ll be the star of the evening!
Like many things in life, it’s all about looking the part – carvers flashing their
knife skills in hotel dining rooms, caterers working in rest homes, people
manning takeaway carts; anywhere food is prepared. We all know that food
tastes better if it’s presented well, and the same applies to catering staff;
Arrow’s stylish uniforms will give your staff an extra touch of class, which will
help your business stand out in a crowded field.
Chefs’ wear — notably the toque and double-breasted jacket — is one of the most recognized of all uniforms. The history is fascinating.
The toque dates to the 16th century, when most trades had a
distinctive hat. It’s not worn so much these days but still gives
that instant signal: serious cook at work!
A few centuries later, Napoleon’s chef Parisian Carême wanted a
uniform, and chose white. He adopted a more stylised hat, with
the height denoting seniority (his was supposedly 46cm high).
The toque traditionally has 100 folds to represent how many
ways a chef can cook an egg, although these days toques are
usually gathered, not pleated.
Carême became one of the first international celebrity chefs.
He later worked for George IV, Tsar Alexander 1 and banker
James Rothschild; and was known as the ‘King of Chefs and Chef
of Kings’. He was an early follower of haute cuisine and changed
the way we dine from ‘Service á la Française’, where all dishes
were served together, to ‘Service á la Russe’, where dishes are
served in the order listed on a printed menu.

The traditional chef’s uniform is, by necessity,
highly practical: designed to protect wearers
from the heat of stoves and the splattering
of hot liquids; and the traditional jacket
is double-breasted so it can be reversed
when one side gets dirty. Fortunately, we’ve
progressed from the knotted cloth buttons!
Chefs’ trousers are usually a dark colour,
to camouflage any spills. Check out
our trouser options – from a formal
pinstripe (with a mobile phone pocket)
to contemporary Jean style trousers
The neck scarf is largely to make the uniform
look more ‘finished’ but it was originally
worn to absorb body sweat – in the old
days, kitchens were like infernos (and they’re
still a very hot place to work).
Arrow Uniforms offers a Chef Revival
bandanna and lots of colourful neck scarves.

LAdIES MERINO JACKETA while ago we had numerous requests to develop an
appropriate uniform item for use in front line retail &
reception roles instead of the traditional formal ladies
tailored corporate jackets. It needed to be something
that looked professional, keeps the wearer warm &
yet not have the old fashioned “cardi” look.
Our Ladies Merino Jacket ticks lots of those boxes. Smart,
professional, comfortable and easy to care for being
machine washable using a gentle wool cycle. This special
blend of 80% Merino and 20% Nylon is created rather
uniquely. The Nylon is structured so that the garment
keeps it’s stretch and shape well and also helps retain
colour. The merino gives it the natural fibre comfort
and the fantastic look and feel of merino products.
But that’s not all! Under the arms in the two side panels there
is a small section of an area called “needle-out” which creates
a vertical ribbed effect. This panel is ideal for a working
garment as it makes it sooooo comfortable to wear when you
have to stretch while on the job.
So it’s the best of both worlds – you look trim and yet this
expandable panel gives you extra room when you need it.

It’s a sure thing we’ve all been faced with stains either at work or home that made us despair. Whether it’s the grass stains on the kids pants, blood spots on your uniforms or ball point pen on your shirt. The answer for those in the know is SARD – trusted by generations.

GENERAL TIPS – PRE-TREAT ObvIOUS STAINS
Sard Wonder Soap safely shifts tough stains and is your best friend! It helps in the removal of those annoying household stains, including ballpoint ink, blood, grass, grease, food, sauces and animal stains.
It is so versatile and you can use it on hands, clothing, carpets, fabrics, vinyl, laminated surfaces, tiles and paintwork.
Most stains can be removed completely, provided that they are handled promptly and properly.
JET PLANES ARE BACK!
HOW dO yOu GET THAT STAIN OuT? TRy SARD WONDER SOAP
Follow these general tips:
Act fast and rinse stains in cold water
before they have a chance to set.
Check the fabric before removing any
stain. Silks, wools and many permanent
press fabrics require special care, while
stains on cotton, linen and washable
fabrics are more easily removed.
Do not rub stains as rubbing may push the stain
further into the fabric. Avoid hot water on an
unknown stain - hot water sets many stains.
Avoid the use of any chlorine bleach unless
the garment tag says it may be used. Fabrics
react differently to different stains and
stain removal treatments, so it is important
to identify the stain to treat it properly.
This wonderful product is available from leading supermarkets and is something every laundry should have.
MOTHS CAN BE dESTRuCTIVE...Moths look innocent enough but they can easily damage clothing before you realise so it pays
to take care of your garments when you store them. The cute little moths you see don’t do
it themselves but they lay eggs which hatch into larvae who do the damage while you sleep.
These gremlins feed upon the greasy spots and food stains we collect without realizing it so it
pays to ensure your clothes are put away clean. The resultant holes can ruin woollen knitwear,
merino tops and suiting’s and destroy expensive garments before you can stop them.
Help is available from your local pharmacy in the form of camphor sachets so you
don’t have to have everything smelling of mothballs all the time. However it does
pay to take care when storing garments that the drawers are cleaned out regularly
and that when you see moths you ensure they are (thoughtfully) removed.
Arrow Uniforms famous Jet Planes are

request – our stocking fillers have returned.

Massey University School of Aviation celebrated their first quarter
century serving the global aviation industry producing “aviators

The School of Aviation has come a long way since the first cohort at the
Massey Aviation Institute, as it was known then, received their brevets at
the Wings ceremony in 1988. There were 28 students on that course.
This year, there are over 400 students enrolled at Massey University in
a variety of aviation degrees. This includes 124 young men and women
completing their professional degree, the Bachelor of Aviation – Air
Transport Pilot, at Massey’s Milson Flight System Centre, in Palmerston
North, - all in uniform while being trained in technologically advanced
aircraft and to the highest professional aviation standard.
Each year there is a special time of celebration as another cohort of
students receive their “wings” which marks the completion of the
practical and academic requirements to become a professional pilot.
Students must then undertake one more year’s study to complete
their degree. If you are interested in exploring a career in aviation – in a
