What is NPA? Non performing asset = when a loan is

not repaid continuously for 1 year, it is converted into NPA. Banks have to make provisions for NPA. Public sector banks have very high NPAs comparatively.

In order to check inflation, what are the quantitative measures that RBI can take?

1. Change bank rate2. Undertake open market operations3. Change reserve requirements 4. Change CRR and SLR

What is SLR? STATUTORY LIQUIDITY RATIO. Every bank has to invest a part of their

total deposits in prescribed securities as per SLR.

What is CRR? CASH RESERVE RATIO. Every bank has to invest a part of their

total deposits in CASH with RBI.

What is moral suasion? Here banks make persuasions and

requests to other banks.

If RBI reduces SLR, CRR and bank rate ,what will be the impact? It will increase credit available to

business thus there will be increase in money available in the system. It will increase inflation, it will also increase business activities, it will also increase the overall demand in the economy.

When were banks nationalized and why? 1969 & 1980. the banks had urban bias,

they neglected agriculture and there was concentration of economic power, so the banks were nationalised.

Which state has highest deposit mobilization? Maharastra

What is priority sector lending? Banks have to live 40% loans to priority

sector. Priority sector includes SC (scheduled caste) , ST (scheduled tribes), small farmers, people from weaker sections etc.

During Depression, what should the RBI do? It should reduce bank rate, SLR, CRR,

buy in open market operations, and persuade banks to lend more and more so that there is more money, more demand and more liquidity in the economic system.

Demand deposits are taken in which money? All = M1 to M4

What is demand deposit? Current account deposit

What is time deposit? Fixed deposits

In which year after 1991 we did not have any privatisation? 1993-94 (although the target was to

realise Rs. 3400 crore through privatisation).

In which year did we have hightest realisation from privatization in 15 years from 1991? 2003-4 = in this year we had realisations

of over Rs. 15547 crore from privatisation of PSUs.

Can a private sector company set up a company in defense sector? Yes ((in 2001 it has been allowed), the

firm must have 100 crores of capital and not more than 26% of FDI)

bulk drug industry).

Are time deposits considered in M1? No – they are considered in M3 and M4.
