FROM THE PASTOR… Dear Parishioners,
It’s August and that means we are in a string of special Masses in Spanish hon-oring the Blessed Mother.
We have actually had three already, and next ’Saturday’s “Assumption of Mary” Mass at 2 pm will be hosted by the Virgin of Cisne group.
August 15th has usually meant for us a very large celebration honoring the Vir-gin of Urkupiña (Patroness of Bolivia), which has sometimes brought out about 500 dancers for the street procession and tribute program of performances, along with a street closing of part of Greenpoint Avenue. Because of the size of this event, it is cancelled this year in observance of the metrics of the pandemic.
Saturday, August 22 at 2 pm will be a 3 pm Mass honoring Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
More into the Fall (Saturday, November 7th at 3 pm) will be the liturgy honoring Mary as the Help of Christians, and, on Saturday, November 21st at 3 pm, a Mass honoring the Blessed Mother as the Virgin of Quinche.
December, of course, means Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The hosting groups vary in the number of participants, but all bring homeland traditions and a deep love for the Mother of Jesus as an exceptional woman--as a poet once put it, “our tainted nature’s solitary boast”.
Feel free to bring your own love for Mary and join us on any of these occasions.

ESPAÑOL
Maximilian Kolbe (born Rajmund Kolbe; Polish: Maksymilian Maria Kolbe [maksɨˌmʲilʲan ˌmarʲja ˈkɔlbɛ]; 8 January 1894 – 14 August 1941), venerated as Saint Maximilian Kolbe, was a Polish Catholic priest and Conventual Francis-can friar who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the German death camp of Auschwitz, located in German-occupied Poland during World War II. He had been active in promoting the veneration of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, founding and supervising the monastery of Niepokalanów near Warsaw, operating an amateur-radio station (SP3RN), and founding or running several other organizations and publi-cations.
On 10 October 1982 Pope John Paul II canonized Father Kolbe and declared him a martyr of charity. The Catholic Church venerates him as the patron saint of amateur-radio operators, of drug addicts, of political prisoners, of families, of journal-ists, of prisoners, and of the pro-life movement. John Paul II declared him "The Pa-tron Saint of Our Difficult Century". His feast day is 14 August, the day of his death.
Due to Kolbe's efforts to promote consecration and entrustment to Mary, he is known as the Apostle of Consecration to Mary.

August 15th Feast of the Assumption
This year, the feast falls on a Saturday. While it remains a holyday honoring Mary, it is not “of obligation”.
On Saturday, August 15th, there will be a Mass in English at 9 am.
That same afternoon, there will a Mass in Spanish (hosted by the Virgen de Cisne group) at 2 pm.
Because of the calendar circumstances this year, there will be no Vigil Mass on Friday or noon Mass on Saturday.
The Saturday 5 pm Mass is the antici-pated Mass of Sunday.
