Dear Parents,

Your children are about to begin preparing their Language Portfolios. They are designed to help your

children reflect on and improve their language learning. Language Portfolios are collections of your

children’s work inside and outside the classroom and will follow them throughout their school life.

This Language Portfolio is your children’s property. They can choose what to include in it. It is

a tool to accompany their learning of languages throughout their school life and is suitable for

documenting their learning when they are changing schools, moving to another level with a

different teacher or when you are moving to another country. In practice, portfolios may include

project or other examples of written language work, computer diskettes (with some work or

drawings completed inside or outside the class), video cassettes (with their favourite story or with

performances of songs, school plays, etc), audio cassettes (with songs performed by your children,

etc), certificates, reports from the teachers, or even a collection of objects or pictures. It is a

collection of what your children want to keep as evidence of what they are learning through the

medium of the English language. The main emphasis is on the process of learning. As a result,

while compiling their portfolios, your children develop the skills to be able to work independently.

Your children will need some guidance during the first level, as it is likely they are not able to

read and write yet. They need a dossier where they will keep all the work of their choosing. It is a

good idea to guide them in keeping their work neat and tidy so that their work is well organised and

will endure for the remainder of their school life. Every time something new is added in the dossier,

help them to record it. When they start working on a new level, guide your children on how to make

a new section in the folder.

Thanking you in advance for your cooperation.
