In 2001, the small city of Owensboro,
Kentucky (USA), population 57,000, used
400,000 dollars in public funds to upgrade
its softball elds, one of the most popular
sports among young Americans. When
work nished, the city hosted 52 women’s
teams for a national softball competition,
attracting hundreds of players and thou-
sands of family members, who lled the
city’s hotels. This was the rst event of this
type to be hosted in the city, however it
was sufcient to have the entire hotel, res-taurant and tourism sector lobby local au-
thorities to organise other similar events.
The city thus invested more than 2 million
dollars to build new structures, including 4
football pitches (both for American foot-
ball and for soccer) and 18 baseball elds.
The following year the new structures
hosted 41 tournaments, attracting a total
of 60,000 visitors and bringing 19 million
dollars in revenue to the city’s hotels, res-
taurants and other leisure businesses.
The segment of youth sport travel isworth around 7 billion dollars, which is
less than 10% of the family tourism in-
dustry, however it is growing constantly
at around 3-5% annually, faster than other
44
segments. The sector is not affected by the
recession, as sport has become part of the
many families’ routines. Indeed, in times
of crisis sports travel is seen by families as
being an alternative to holidays.
The trend looks like continuing in the
near future. The latest survey by the Sport
and Goods Manufacturing Association,
which provides data on the sector, shows
that young people today, generally classi-
ed as ‘generation Y’, are twice as likely to
be part of a sports team than young peoplefrom the previous generation. Generation
Y is in fact the social network generation,
always connected, and as such more likely
to be part of a team than the ‘individual-
ists’ of generation X.
The same survey shows a greater pro-
pensity for outdoor sport: sports such as
lacrosse and rugby are growing, while
indoor sports such as ice hockey and 5-a-
side soccer (indoor) are not growing at
all. Swimming and weightlifting are still
among the most popular sports, however.

ties being developed even
by small towns that want to
generate new sources of in-
come. The positive news for
the amusement sector is that
these structures also include
entertainment facilities for
the families that need to en-
tertain the brothers and sis-ters of the players.
Next summer, not far
from Nashville for example,
the small town of Eliza-
bethtown will open a space
covering over 60 hectares
called Elizabethtown Sports Park. The
total investment is 29 million dollars, and
is aimed at creating sporting structures as
well as accommodation and attractions to
entertain families. The complex includes
12 baseball elds, 10 grass football elds
and 2 synthetic elds for disabled players.
Those who don’t want to spend all their
time watching the games will be able to
choose between 6 dining areas, meeting
spaces and 4 games parks, as well as Fun-
topia, a new existing destination in the city
that is now being relaunched in combina-
tion with the sporting facilities.
The whole complex is surrounded by
bicycle lanes and pedestrian areas, with
lighting systems typical of major events.
The entire area will also allow free inter-
net access, which is certain to open new
opportunities. In fact, events or updates
can be uploaded in streaming, with op-
portunities for advertising investments. At
the same time, families can freely access
content and above all social networks, and
so a small town 5-a-side match can imme-
diately become a global event.
Elizabethtown Sports Park has been
nanced by sales tax added to restaurant
bills starting in 2007, which has generatedmore than 2 million dollars a year. Origi-
nally there was a lot of criticism about
the tax, but once the project will be com-
pleted the restaurants themselves will ben-
et from the higher ood of visitors. The
complex will in fact be one of the largest
in the United States, with the possibility of
host tournaments up to 4-5 days long and
involving hundreds of teams and thou-
sands of spectators.
Seen from above, the park has a clover
shape, with the baseball elds on each leaf
and dining areas in the centre. The layout
was chosen based on the experience of
another small town that has invested in
sports tourism: Snowden Grove Park in
the city of Southaven, Mississippi.
This structure was built in 1999 by a
private company, but in 2004 the council
purchased and upgraded it. Today it hosts
many of the main amateur baseball and
softball tournaments in the United States.
Now that American cities have discov-
ered this resource, a goldrush is on, with
erce bidding to win the rights to host
tournaments. Some more famous centres
don’t take part in the bidding. New arriv-
als, on the other hand, frequently present
an offer both as regard the sporting as-
pects, managed by a Sport Councils, and
tourism, with ideas on how to entertain
the thousands of visitors who do not take
part in the competitions. This aspect ismanaged by local Convention Visitor Bu-
reaus, which have the task of promoting
the projects both outside and inside the lo-
cal community. One of the most debated
60 ettari, chiamato Elizabethtown SportsPark.
L’intera area inol-
tre consentirà l’accesso gratuito a internet

In origine ci furono
Vista, Orlando, in Florida.

topics at the recent convention of the Na-

One of the rst leisure companies torecognise this trend was the Walt Disney
Company, which has spent 100 million
dollars to modernise an area at Walt Dis-

structures was opened in 1997, however
in 2008 the entire complex was upgraded

This is a multi-purpose facility that hosts
national events in 60 types of sport, from
minor leagues, to cheerleading champi-

complete example, because it also offers
facilities for those who are not interested
in practising sport: at the Playstation hall,
for 5 dollars people can play the latest
video game for 30 minutes... without even
raising a sweat.n
