What dialects do you recognise?

Received pronunciation

• A pronunciation of British English, originally based on the speech of the upper class of south eastern England and characteristic of the English spoken at the public schools and at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Until recently it was the standard form of English used in British broadcasting.

Standard English

• The accepted way of speaking English

• A form which everyone can understand no matter what region (or country) they come from

Words and / or accent specific to your social group.

Glossary of youth speak

In pairs list between 10 – 20 words commonly used by you and your peers

Write them on an A3 poster

Illustrate the words – use graffiti drawings or clippings from magazines

Give a Standard English definition for them
