Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 11–4)

Main Idea

Key Concepts: Units of Time

Example 1:Convert Units of Time

Example 2:Use Different Units of Measure

Example 3:Use Fractions in Measures

• I will convert units of time.

Convert Units of Time

Students spend about 360 minutes a day in school. How many hours a day do they spend in school?

Answer: So, the students spend 6 hours a day in school.

To convert smaller units of time to larger units, divide. Since 1 hour (h) = 60 min, divide 360 by 60.

360 ÷ 60 = 6

360 min = h

Convert Units of Time

Check Use mental math to check the answer.

300 min = 300 ÷ 60 or 5 h

420 min = 420 ÷ 60 or 7 h

Since 6 hours is between 5 and 7 hours, the answer is reasonable.

Use Different Units of Measure

Answer: So, 72 weeks = 1 year 20 weeks.

Since 52 weeks = 1 year, divide 72 by 52 to find the number of years.

72 ÷ 52 = 1 R20

1 R20 means 1 whole year and 20 weeks of another year.

Complete: 72 weeks = years weeks.

4. D0% 0%0%0%

A. 1 year 61 weeks

B. 2 years 8 weeks

C. 2 years 10 weeks

D. 3 years 0 weeks

Complete: 112 weeks = years weeks.

Use Fractions in Measure

How many days is 100 hours?

To convert a smaller unit to a larger unit, divide. Since 24 hours = 1 day, divide 100 by 24.

4 R4 means 4 whole days and 4 hours of another day.

100 ÷ 24 = 4 R4, or 416

Answer: So, 100 h = 4 days 4 hours or 4 days.16
