Species Interactions

November 2, 2015

Do Now

• Collect materials from the front of the room• Take your seat• Start writing your answer to today’s warm-up:

What kinds of interactions exist between organisms that live in the

same habitat?

Announcements

• There will be a quiz on Thursday/Friday!– Introduction to Environmental Science– Scientific Inquiry– The Tragedy of the Commons– Species Interactions– Carrying capacity

Objective

• Explain the major types of species interactions

By the end of class, students will be able to:

Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics

What kinds of interactions exist between organisms that live in the

same habitat?

Habitat: Where an organism lives

There are three major types of interactions between organisms

1. Predation2. Competition3. Symbiosis

1. Predation /

• Predation is an interaction in which one organism kills another for food.

• The organism that does the killing for food is the predator.

• The organisms that is killed for food is the prey.

What is predation?

What is the relationship between predator and prey?

2. Competition /

In any ecosystem, there is a limited amount of food, water and shelter.

Competition is the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource.

What is competition?

What do organisms have to do in order to reduce competition?

Example of competition

Niches

• Niche: How an organism survives in its habitat

• Potential niche: The total space that is suitable for an organism in the absence of predators and competitors

• Actual niche: The actual space that an organism can inhabit as a result of the influence of predators and competitors

3. Symbiosis /??

• Any relationship in which two species live closely together

Three types of symbiosis

• Mutualism - both species benefit

Mutualism: Zebra and oxpecker

Three types of symbiosis

• Commensalism - one species benefits, the other is not affected

Commensalism: whale and barnacles

Three types of symbiosis

• Parasitism - one species benefits while the other is harmed

Parasitism: human and mosquito
