TECHMoLDEDPLASTiCS-MEADviLLE,PAericbOWersOX brAnDOnHOugH Plasticengineer engineeringManagerDue to the customer specific gating location and resultant fill patterns in plastic products, weld lines and gas traps are often inevitable. Steps can be taken to minimize these imperfections, but frequently they are not capable of being eliminated. Once a mold has been built the steps to eradicate troublesome weld lines or gas traps can be costly, and often impractical. This presentation will show a case study of how Tech Molded Plastics utilized the latest in melt management technologies in order to create products that re-define the industries approach to eliminating plastic product imperfections.

Hello,I would like to welcome you back to another great year of SPE meetings. This is my first term as President of this section. I look forward to meet-ing you at our monthly meetings. We are putting together a selection of new technology for you. We are trying to get our presenters to not only talk about the technology, but to discuss how you can bring it into your facility. The monthly meetings are an excellent way to meet other professionals and to network.SPE is a volunteer based organization. We are always looking for people to help out with the Board of Directors. These monthly meet-ings and our special events do not happen without the members of the board. If you would be interested in helping, please feel free to contact me.Again, I look forward to seeing you this year .... Jon

PennstatePletstudentsareBack!Hello fellow SPE members. The PLET students at Behrend are ready for an exciting upcoming year. The Student SPE Club is working very hard to organize various social events each month, open to students, members of industry, professors, friends, and family in an effort to strengthen and expand the plastics community. For September the Senior Class officers are planning a sand volleyball tournament. The event is scheduled for September 27 at the Penn State Behrend sand volleyball courts.
These social events not only serve as vital link between PLET students, but they create a comfortable social atmosphere to introduce students to lo-cal members of the industry. Student SPE Class Officers are meeting weekly throughout September to plan the events throughout this semester. It is our goal to host events that both students and industry members will be interested in attending, and we need your input. Any members that are interested in attending, hosting, or have event suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. October’s issue will include the schedule of events, so be sure to check back!
In other news, the Senior Class will be visiting Spain and Portugal this October. Among the invaluable experience of inter-national travel and sightseeing, students will be touring a tooling shop in Portugal, and attending Equiplas ’08 to view some of the newest equipment and technology in the industry. So remember to meet the students and place your souvenir requests this month!

MAIN DINNER PRIZE - SPE flat screen HDTV was won by Vicki Powell
50/50 - John Ralston won $220 in the 50-50 raffle.
KAYAK - Mason Myers won the kayak, but was disqualified because he drew his own ticket and his boss wouldn’t let him keep the kayak because it was donated by their company, Beaumont Technologies. So it was auctioned off for $240 to KUST DUSKA of Engineered Plastics.

A School at the Mall ? If you drive by the former Blair building (or Children’s Palace, if you want to go way back), you can’t help but notice the digital sign and big blue letters at the new Erie Institute of Technology location. This half-century old institution will be the location of the April meeting. You will get a chance to tour the 50,000 square foot facility and listen to a presentation about their new advanced manufacturing training programs, given by Dave Baird and Kit Carson. Additionally, Randy Beibel from GreatLakes 3D CAD/CAM, Jerry Haas from HAAS, Larry Eckert from Prime Tech, and Shawn Coulson from A. W. Miller will be on hand to provide demonstrations and literature on their products. This is one meeting you won’t want to miss. Come and see how this school can meet the training needs of regional employers.

EIT: Erie’s Advanced Manufacturing Technology SchoolSome History …
It’s often said that Erie area employers cannot find employees with the skills they need. But, one Erie technical training school has taken steps to alleviate this situation. Founded in 1958, EIT is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. With the recent opening of a new 50,000 sq.ft. training center, Erie Institute of Technology has filled the void created when the former CAMtech training facility closed.
Around the same time the assets of the former CAMtech were acquired, EIT -- an electronics and computer school -- was running out of space. The decision was made to combine the two and build one new facility to house everything. Several sites were considered and the former Blair Building at the Millcreek Mall was selected, due to its central location to the major highways and interstates. After extensive renovation, classes started in April 2007.

Erie Institute of Technology has announced its slate of industry-specific training for this fall. Classes are scheduled in the evening to be convenient for employees who are working, but need to gain additional workplace skills. Industry related training also meets the needs of local employers, no matter what industry.
General core learning classes scheduled this fall include: Basic Math, Math for Technology, OSHA Safety Standards, Practical Dimensional Inspection, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing, Intro to Statistical Process control, and Blueprint Reading (level I and level II).
Shop related classes include: Basic Machining level I, Master-cam X, Intro to CNC, Intro to G&M Programming, Intro to PLCs, Hydraulics, and Pneumatics. Computer courses include: Basic Windows Applications, Keyboarding, Microsoft Word, Excel I & II, Access I, and Intro to Networking.
This past summer, conducted a 104-hour Basic Machining Tech-nology training course for two groups of employees from local industries. In addition, a third group was trained on just the Machining portion of the course. Thirty students from twelve regional employers attended classes in Blueprint Reading, Shop
inDUSTRY-SPECiFiCTRAininGFallschedule
Math, Inspection and Measurement Techniques, and Manufactur-ing Processes and Tooling.
The project was funded through the Regional Center for Work-force Excellence Metals Industry Partnership. The Curriculum was developed and customized by local manufacturers and the Northwest Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center. NWIRC coordinated this effort.
This type of training benefits employees just entering manufac-turing jobs by giving them the basic skills they need. Existing employees benefit by refreshing and improving their existing skills, and learning new ones. Employees can then use their upgraded knowledge and skills to promote themselves within their organization.
Within the past two years, EIT has trained over 1,840 students in the region. Now in its convenient new location at the Millcreek Mall, Erie Institute of Technology remains committed to meeting employers’ training needs in the region.
