• Navajo group for hunting and growing corn500-1000 years agoThey learned how to raise large herds of sheep

Europeans in the SW

• Spanish came here first• Came looking for gold but found none

Spanish settlements

• Before the pilgrims landed on Plymouth rock, the Spanish had already built settlement in the SW region-Most of what is now New Mexico

Other settlers

• Other settlers came looking for silver, copper and gold

• Others came just for farming and to raise cattle/sheep

People of the SW today

• For many years this region was not highly populated

• The development of roads, highways, and the automobile made it easier for people to get to this region

AC

• Many people moved to this region because of air conditioning. Willis Carrier-built the first AC and buildings were now being cooled

Population increases

• Phoenix, AZ is the fastest growing city in the nation

• Many newcomers and immigrants settle here• Also many retire here-for the beauty and

warmth

Culture

• Celebrate heritage• Pow wows-native festival where they dance,

sing, listen to songs, and eat food• Rain dances!• Festivals-crab festival in Texas• Cinco de Mayo-5th of May
