Water SamplingNiskin and Nansen bottles– Close on both ends at a

particular depth– Close using a

Rosette– Holds a collection of

water bottles– Close using an electronic

“messenger” (usually controlled from on a ship)

– Advantage: allows water collecting at many different depths

Temperature

Thermometer-measures how much heat is in the sample

Density

Hydrometer-floats in sample-measures density, which can be converted to salinity at a particular temperature

Salinity

Refractometer– Measures how much light

bends– Look through one end,

place water sample on other end to measure salinity

Other ParametersCTD– Conductivity,

temperature, depth

– Measures electrical current running through water

– Converts that charge to a measure of salinity
