What are Solid Figures?

Solid figures are 3-dimensional figures that have length, width, and height. Solid figures can be made with more than one shape.

Types of Solid Figures

There are 6 different types of solid figures we are going to look at today:

Pyramids PrismsCylinders ConesSpheres Cubes

What are Pyramids?

A pyramid is a solid figure that has a polygon for a base, and three or more triangular faces that meet at a point called an apex. The triangular sides are called the lateral faces to distinguish them from the base.

Types of Pyramids

There are many different types of pyramids. Pyramids are classified by the shape of their base, since all of the other faces are triangles. So, if we had a pentagon for the base of a pyramid, that pyramid could be classified as a pentagonal pyramid.

Examples of Pyramids

Here are some examples of pyramids. Can you classify them by their bases?

What are Prisms?

A prism is a solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases (which are polygons) and flat faces.

Prism

s

Types of Prisms

Prisms can, like pyramids, be classified by the shape of their bases. So, if you have a prism with triangles for bases, you would have a triangular prism.

Review of Prisms

A prism is a solid figure that has parallel and congruent bases (which are polygons) and flat faces.

Prisms can be classified by the shape of their bases.

A Special Type of Prism

There is another solid figure that is also a prism, but it is a special type of prism. We will talk about that solid figure in the next section.

CUBESSolid Figures

What are Cubes?

Recall that a prism is a solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases (which are polygons) and flat faces. A cube is a special type of prism, so it fits that description.

Cubes

What Makes a Cube a Cube?

A cube is a type of prism; a rectangular prism, to be exact. The difference between an ordinary rectangular prism and a cube is the fact that all of a cube’s faces are congruent, or, the same shape and size. All of the 6 faces on a cube are also squares. Therefore, a cube has the same dimensions for its length, width, and height.

Cubes

An Example of a Cube

This is an example of a cube:

Cubes

Notice that all of the faces on the cube are congruent squares. That key feature is what

sets a cube apart from a rectangular prism.

Cube or Rectangular Prism?

Look at the solid figures below. Identify whether they are cubes or rectangular prisms.

CYLINDERSSolid Figures

What are Cylinders?

A cylinder is a solid figure that has 2 congruent, parallel, circular bases that are connected by a curved side.

Examples of Cylinders

These are all cylinders:

Notice that all of these solid figures are cylinders because they all have 2 congruent, parallel, circular bases that are connected by a curved side.

CONESSolid Figures

What are Cones?

A cone is a solid figure with 1 circular base and a vertex that is not on the base. The vertex and the circular base are connected by a curved side.

This is the circular base of the cone.

This is the vertex of the cone.
