Our Solar System
Our Solar System
Our solar system is made up of:
Sun Nine planets Their moons Asteroids Comets
Sun The Sun is the center of the solar
system. The temperature at its surface is
about 6000 degree celsius. Its size is very big. It can hold 13 lakhs earth like ours
within itself. All the other objects revolve around
the sun due to gravitational force.

Planets Mercury. Venus. Earth. Mars. Jupiter. Saturn. Uranus. Neptune. Pluto
Inner Planets The inner four rocky
planets at the center of the solar system are:
Mercury. Venus. Earth. Mars.
Mercury
Planet nearest the sun. Second smallest planet. Covered with craters. Has no moons or rings. About size of Earth’s moon.
MercuryThese recent images from the These recent images from the MESSENGER satellite (Jan 2008) show MESSENGER satellite (Jan 2008) show a surface similar to the Moon.a surface similar to the Moon.
Venus Sister planet to Earth. Has no moons or rings. Hot, thick atmosphere. Brightest object in sky besides
sun and moon (called as morning star or evening star).
Covered with craters, volcanoes, and mountains.

Earth Third planet from sun. Only planet known to have life
and liquid water. Atmosphere composed of
Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%), and other gases (1%).
The axis around which earth rotates is slightly inclined. Because of this, earth has summer and winter season.

Mars Fourth planet from sun. Appears as bright reddish color in
the night sky. The soil is rich in iron, which
makes it appear red. Surface features volcanoes and
huge dust storms. Has 2 moons: Phobos and
Deimos.
Mars
Outer Planets
The outer planetscomposed of gas are
: Jupiter. Saturn. Uranus. Neptune.
Jupiter Largest planet in solar
system. Brightest planet in sky 63 moons, 5 visible
from Earth. Strong magnetic field. Giant red spot. Rings have 3 parts:
Halo Ring, Main Ring, Gossamer Ring.
Jupiter

Saturn 6th planet from sun. Beautiful set of rings. 31 moons. Largest moon, Titan. Easily visible in the
night sky Voyager explored
Saturn and its rings.
SaturnSaturn’s Atmosphere
Uranus 7th planet from sun. Has a faint ring system. 27 known moons. Covered with clouds. Uranus sits on its side
with the north and south poles sticking out the sides.
Uranus
Neptune
8th planet from sun. Discovered through
math. 7 known moons. Triton largest moon. Great Dark Spot thought
to be a hole, similar to the hole in the ozone layer on Earth.
Neptune
Internal Structures.
Outermost Planet
Pluto, the outermost planet, is a small solid icy planet is smaller than the Earth's Moon.
Pluto
9th planet from sun (usually).
Never visited by spacecraft.
Orbits very slowly. Moon, Charon, is very
close to Pluto and about the same size.

Asteroids
Small bodies Believed to be left
over from the beginning of the solar system billions of years ago
100,000 asteroids lie in belt between Mars and Jupiter
Largest asteroids have been given names
AsteroidsBased on known Earth-crossing asteroid orbits, it is estimated that 3 asteroids impact Earth every 1 million years!
Comets
Small icy bodies. Travel around the Sun. Give off gas and dust as they
pass by. Consist of brilliant sphere
called its “head” and a long “tail”.
As it goes near to the sun the tail gets longer.

EVALUATION ? Jupiter has moons. What is Solar System? How big is the Sun relative to ea
rth? Why is Mars called The Red plan
et? Write the names of Indian Astro
nauts and collect their pictures
Answer.
63 moons The sun, the nine planets,
their moons, asteroids and comets forms a solar system.
The sun is so big that it can accommodate 13 lakh Earths in it.
Because its soil is rich in iron and it appears red.
