Yom Ha’Atzmaut 5776 Israel is 68 and Soille sure did celebrate! From the
opening ceremony to the moving videos to close the
day, it was a truly special day. This year's theme was
based around the technological innovations of Israel.
The opening ceremony was a flag march by our 8th
grade class. It ended with an artistic display of a
magen david made out of flags. Well done march and
a great start to the day! Afterwards, students rotated
through stations and learned about the tremendous impact Israel has had on the world. Stations
exposed students to the medical advances, military advances, and technological advances. Each
station creatively incorporated games or activities themed after their Israeli innovation. We
ended our day with a special video prepared by 8th grade students, Hannah Rappaport & Tal
Dimenstein. A big thanks goes to the Hebrew staff who works tirelessly to make this day special
at Soille! John well done by the 8th grade students and the entire middle school! We at Soille can
truly say, " ,ליבי במזרח ואני בסוף מערב” “My heart is in the east and I am in the far west.”

Parshat Kedoshim OVERVIEW: Parshat Kedoshim – Lev. 18 – 20:27
Kedoshim: The nation is enjoined to strive toward holiness, based on G-d’s essence being Holy, and the fact that human beings are created in G-d’s image. Many prohibitions and positive commandments are taught:
Positive Mitzvot: Awe for parents and respect for the elderly; leaving part of the harvest for the poor; loving others (especially a convert); eating in Jerusalem the fruits from a tree's 4th year; awe for the Temple; respect for Torah scholars, the blind and the deaf. Prohibitions: Idolatry; eating offerings after their time-limit; theft and robbery; denial of theft; false oaths; retention of someone's property; delaying payment to an employee; hating or cursing a fellow Jew (especially one's parents); gossip; placing physical and spiritual stumbling blocks; perversion of justice; inaction when others are in danger; embarrassing; revenge; bearing a grudge; cross-breeding; wearing a garment of wool and linen; harvesting a tree during its first three years; gluttony and intoxication; witchcraft; shaving the beard and sideburns; tattooing. (C) 2016 Ohr Somayach International
DRASHA: The demands that the Torah imposes upon us with the large array of commandments that appear in this week's Torah reading are major and taxing. Nevertheless we have a rule that the Torah never demands the impossible from human beings or of human behavior. As such, I feel that the true challenge implicit in the commandment to be a holy and dedicated person – the idea that is present in the opening words of this week's Torah reading – is the fact that the path that leads us to this holy and dedicated state of being are mundane in their nature. We would understand and perhaps even appreciate if the commandments were of an extraordinary measure of self-denial, asceticism or enforced isolation from human society. That is the picture that many of us have of a holy person, someone alone atop a mountain involved in a permanent state of meditation and purification. We are not accustomed to think of holy people as being the people that we come in contact with on a daily basis in our life experience. We assigned the role of holiness and dedication to G-d to great Torah scholars and other spiritual leaders. We do not think of the storekeeper, the bus driver or any of our service personnel as being obligated to be especially holy. But even a cursory review of this week's Torah reading will show us that the nature of most of the commandments described concern themselves with everyday life and with regular and ordinary events. Holiness is viewed as not being an exalted state of being out of the reach of the average Jew but rather as a natural and necessary by-product of living a life of Torah observance.
There is a legend concerning the great Maggid of Dubno, Rabbi Yaakov Kranz and his relationship to Rabbi Elijah, the Gaon of Vilna. Rabbi Elijah invited the famed Maggid to visit him and to point out to him how he could improve himself in the service of his Creator. Rabbi Elijah, who spent nearly every moment of his waking hours in the study of Torah, seemed to have little room for improvement in his spiritual life. However, the Maggid said to his host as follows: “You sit here in your study, surrounded by your books, immersed in Torah knowledge and therefore you are the great Gaon of Vilna. But, why don't you go out and stand with the fishmonger in the marketplace of Vilna, in the real world of human interaction, of buying and selling, of temptation and honesty, and let us then see if you would truly be the Gaon of Vilna.” The legend then tells us that the great Rabbi Elijah wept when he heard this challenge of the Maggid. Holiness was to be found not only in the study room but it had to exist in the fish market as well. We are all bidden to be holy and to sanctify all aspects of our behavior and life and be worthy, at all times, of serving G-d in the proper manner. Shabbat shalom. Rabbi Berel Wein (C)2016

The Soille Scene
The First Grade Class had the wonderful opportunity to honor their moms (just as they learned in Parshat
Kedoshim) by organizing a very special Tea Party. We had a full-house and the students enjoyed serving,
singing, cuddling, and pampering their well- deserving moms!
Yom
HaZichoron
A moving display was set
up in our lobby on
Wednesday to mark Yom
HaZikoron - a day dedicated to remembering the
fallen soldiers of the IDF and the victims of terror. A
moment of silence was held in the afternoon. We
particularly honor the service of the many Hebrew Day
School alums who have and are currently serving in
the IDF, acting on their love for Israel.
Holocaust Remembrance Day
Last Thursday, commemorating Yom HaShoah /
Holocaust Remembrance Day, our Middle School
students watched a Survivor Story video with
Rabbi Hollander, who then led a discussion about
resilience and building a new life following
tragedy. This was part of a year long course on
the Shoah which is being taught in grades 7 and 8
by Rabbi Hollander. Prior to Pesach survivors
Gunther and Yuta Cohen discussed their
experiences as survivors. Mr. Cohen was able to
survive Kristalnacht and escape from Germany,
eventually reaching Shanghai. Mrs. Cohen was
born in Berlin and survived as a young child
hidden there.
THREE-PEAT!
You've heard this word in connection to the Lakers.
You've heard it in connection to the Yankees. You've
even heard of it in connection to the Chicago Bulls.
Now our Hebrew Day Huskies boys soccer team joins
the ranks of illustrious three-peats! After a difficult
season unlike others where they tied two games, our
boys played an incredible game on Thursday to clinch
the championship! It was a tense beginning as the
opposing team scored first. Huskies answered soon
after with a goal and the score was tied. Many attempts
and close goals made for an intense vibe. In the last
minute of the game the score was tied. With 30
seconds left on the clock Elias Waisbord scored off of a
sideline throw in! The Huskies are champions both on
and off the court! Talent, resilience, determination,
and a lot of hard work brought this win home! Way to
go boys! Congratulations to Coach Kevin Mahr on a job
well done!

Nesiyah Tova!
We embraced our love for Israel this week and many
classes took a virtual flight to Israel complete with
airplane style seating, in-flight snacks, passports, and
Israeli flight attendants! Yom Ha’atzmaut was a delight
for the culinary senses with children enjoying their feast
of falafel, pita, chummus, and Israeli salad. Music,
dances and parades complemented this special day.
Many thanks to Morah Chaya for helping create a mini
Israel! The preschoolers were invited to shop at the
“shuk”, Israel’s favorite farmer’s market, Machane
Yehuda. They had so much fun choosing their
products, placing them in a basket, and using a pretend
shekel to purchase their goodies! Then, they travelled
to Eilat where they enjoyed fishing and came back to
Jerusalem to write notes for the Kotel. What a trip!
This week’s parsha, Kedoshim, commands us to be holy
just like Hashem. Some classes talked about what it
means to be holy and how we act when we feel holy.
The way we treat our friends,
ourselves,
and our
families

we know

A fantastic effort was put forth this past Tuesday by our Hebrew Day Girls' Huskies basketball team in their game against the French American school. The girls laid it all on the court! They played aggressively but maintained their character! Every point, every steal, was coupled with sweat and determination. At the half they were up 9-5 and fired up! They fought hard to the very last buzzer. In the end they lost 18-15, but not without a fight! Amazing prospects for next year! We are so proud of our girls! Win or lose, here at Soille we play as a team! Congrats to Coach Ray and Ms. Cox on a job well done! Onwards and upwards!
