The {500,000-p1us shareof the funds provided toStreetGames, which performsits mission through localpartners with communityknowledge, is being used toprovide activrties and supportfor 200 vulnerable young peoplein each of four city aleas andpay for iour link workers inthose areas.

The idea is to help themimprove their health and well-being by connecting them withlocal, non-clinical services inthe community, which couldbe run by the local authorityor a charity.

Afrer four ro six conversatiou.with a link worker, theyoung people are hookedLrp to community servicessuch as sport and activities,volunteering, counselling andpeer support. They can alsoreceive help with housing,employment and education.

StreetGames' head of healthPaul Jarvis-Beesley says:'We have the first young peoplecoming through the systemriglrt now, but rhey are not justcoming through primary careand GPs, as mostly happenswith adtrlt social prescribing.Young people don't always goto seek help from their GP in theway that aduits do.

'Often they will presentproblems to their sports coach,youth worker or college orschool nurse. In many caseswe are getting referrals fromchild and adolescent mentalhealth services or youthoffending teams.'

LinkworkersOnce referred to the scheme theyoung person is assessed by alink worker who, in a series ofup to six meetings, will discusswhat help would be mostappropriate.

Mr Jarvis-Beesley says theproject is much-needed: 'Mentalhealth and well-being servicesfor young people are hugelyunder-invested.

'I think it's one fifteenth of themoney that goes to adults, andthere are huge waiting lists evenif you can get over the threshold
