President 2020 ANDY TAYLOR

Version: Website:1 - Page: 3 - Date: 23/03/2020

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Member I feel very honoured to have been asked back in October 2018 to be the President of the Halifax Huddersfield District Union of Golf Clubs. Prior to 2019 I had only a minimal understanding of the workings of our Union and had taken for granted the incredible effort of our Executive to ensure our Union enjoys the efficient running of both its internal competitions and our participation in the wider Yorkshire Inter-District Union events. I arrive in this role following the most successful year in the History of our Union, having won both the YIDU Senior Team League and the YIDU Junior Team Championship in the same year. I am pleased that the majority of our hard-working volunteer Executive have decided to continue into 2020 as we endeavour to refine and modernise our governance of the game along with our member clubs. There will be plenty of challenges ahead in 2020 with the new World Handicapping System and Safe Golf initiatives amongst others to take into consideration. I hope to continue with our Unions programme of modernisation with the new and improved website and upgraded systems for competition management. I sincerely hope the efforts of our CEO of Teams and our Teams Manager are rewarded in 2020 with the same if not improved success. I would also like to thank those members of the Executive who have decided to retire. I would like to particularly thank John Lawrence who has diligently served as Union Secretary since 1999 As for myself, I have been a member of Crosland Heath Golf Club for over 35 years. I have served as an officer of the club for almost 20 years and enjoyed being Captain in both 2010 and 2011! Over the years I have been Golf Chairman, served on Greens, House and Social Committees and as Competition Secretary up to the end of the 2019 season. I represented the club at both Handicap and Scratch team level and was Club Champion in 2005! I would like to congratulate Glynn Mellor from Elland Golf Club on his nomination as President Elect for 2020 (President 2021) and look forward to working with him closely during the next year. It would be remiss of me not to thank our sponsors whose generous contributions and without whom our commitment to a professional approach to supporting Scratch and Junior Golf throughout our Union could not be maintained. Special thanks also to my wife Alison for her continued support in my golfing pursuits. Finally I wish you and your club a happy and successful golfing year in 2020. Andrew Taylor, President 2020.

YIDU Senior Team Report Could we turn our ever improving form into a table topping effort?

Buoyed by our second place finish in 2018 and the boys believing they have a chance to “create history”

That old cliché take one match at a time, no matches are easy if you get complacent you’ll come a cropper. Prepare well, organise, be positive and believe. A win at Cleveland against Teesside set us up nicely for Sheffield at Halifax West End, another victory, joint top with three other Unions. Next up Leeds at Howley Hall, a poor group performance and a loss.

Bradford away at Bingley St Ives. If we wish to create history we can’t lose again, a confident performance and a win. Harrogate win again, match against them at Ilkley will be important. Next up East Riding at Huddersfield, competent may be ruthless performance, a resounding victory. Harrogate away, they are in the mix following some good results. Have to grind out a result. Wow... nervy, emotional and scared but the lads know what they’re doing. They won the last four singles to gain a draw 18 all. Opportunity beckons. Halifax West End to play York, Sunday 2nd September, win this match and you’ll be champions. Say nothing, be excited, be nervous, be grumpy. Lee Rowbotham, on his debut, holes a putt at the last hole to secure 19 points. History, celebration. Thank you boys, absolutely fantastic. All 23 played a role believing in each other, providing that one piece of magic that kept the chance alive.

A week later the Team Championship at The Oaks, confident mainly in form, unfortunately it wasn’t to be. A rejuvenated Harrogate Union were magnificent, we finish 3rd, an improvement of 2 places on the last 2 years. My thanks to those that support us, sponsors, parent’s members of the Executive, wives, girlfriends. Now for 2020, can this good golf team be considered great?

I’m working on the opportunity. Frank Greaves, HHDUGC Teams Manager

YIDU JUNIOR TEAM

YIDU Junior Team Report This was a fantastic season, filled with surprises. In the 7 match league we never fielded our strongest team, many times by handicap we were the underdogs but those 19 boys played with spirit, skill, determination and a team ethic that drew them all closer together for a common goal, to retain their title. When a big performance was required someone produced it, epic fight backs and from lost causes victory, especially at York where those boys proved they didn’t need me. Feeling we would lose on points difference as we hadn’t scored heavily enough. I didn’t feel that it would rest on a York player requiring to hole a putt at the last at York GC to determine the outcome. Watched by John Turner who travelled to observe the fate of our team, the putt missed and the boys were second losing by 18 points over 7 matches where 36 points are played for. From our junior squad we lost Nathan Sheard, Isaac Turner and Harry Mowl. I wish them well in whatever they do and thank them for their contribution. When saying good bye there are always some hellos and this was said to Jack, Harry, James, Habib, Zak and Oliver However, all was not lost off to Bingley St Ives, 35th Junior Team Championship, never won before. This was a stepping stone to 2020 when HHDUGC host this event, it was pointed out to me that our team had the lowest combined handicaps, I didn’t know. We were there to play golf! To Harry, Isaac, Ben, Oliver, Matthew, Dylan and Habib not only did you play skilfully you played with a determination for your team. The prize giving, too emotional to speak! Another piece of history as a team and for Matthew Holden, the JW Peet Memorial Bowl for the best 36 hole gross, played for since 1987 and the first HHDUGC recipient. I wish to thank those parents who not only supported their boys but me, their hospitality, their generosity and their friendship. See you soon. Frank Greaves, HHDUGC Teams Manager
