SMOKE-FREE BURN PILE TUTORIAL

First things, first:

Call the Burn Line Information, 209-223-6246. Listen to the entire message.

Check the weather report for wind forecasts in your area

Ensure that you have set aside a window of time to devote your undivided attention to your burn pile

Have your permits current (CALFIRE & Air District)

Gather your tools: *charged hose with sprayer*rake, pitchfork, shovel, pruners*telephone *gloves*water, snacks for you*lighter or matches

Gather supplementary fuels in addition to your pine needles –

pine cones & sticks work well; bark does not

Sticks for supplementary fuel

Gather and burn only DRY pine needlesdo not rake to bare soil – leave a 2-3 inch layer of duff

Duff: forest litter such as pine needles and leaves.

Keeps soil cool and reduces weeds

* Select an open space near water source

* Look up – stay away from overhanging branches

* Rake a 20 foot diameter clearance down to bare mineral soil

4-foot diameter burn pile

Prepare to light: paper grocery bag + newspaper

NO NEED FOR GASOLINE

Add sticks to get going, then add pine needles one fork at a time

Wear protective clothing – cotton, long sleeves, long pants, shoes, gloves

Keep it hot !

Stay with fire, continue to add needles and sticks, lift with fork and get oxygen to fireStay within the 4-foot boundary

Stir to reduce smoke and monitor till out

Minimal smoke output

Be a good neighbor –

don’t smoke ‘em out!
