KOBE'S BACK LOOKING TO REBOUND IN TRIPLE BENDBy Claire Novak
Lord Nelson steps back into graded company and
Kobe's Back hopes to rebound in the $300,000
Triple Bend Stakes (gr. I) June 25 at Santa Anita Park.
Joining The Gold Cup at Santa Anita (gr. I) as
co-anchor of the Saturday program, the seven-fur-
long sprint drew a field of eight, led by the two grade
II winners.
Lord Nelson, who won a June 3 allowance at Santa
Anita at six furlongs, will make his second start off a
layoff that dated back to a third-place finish last De-
cember behind champion sprinter Runhappy in the
Malibu Stakes (gr. I). That Malibu run was the Spend-
thrift Farm contender's first start after he missed the
summer and fall of his 3-year-old season following a
fourth in the Pat Day Mile (gr. III) in May at Churchill
Downs.
The 4-year-old Pulpit runner seeks his first grad-
ed victory for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert since
winning the seven-furlong San Vicente Stakes (gr. II)
in February of his 3-year-old season. Rafael Bejarano
has the return call for the fourth race in a row. The
duo departs from post 4.

ACTION ON BROCKTON MEET DELAYED AGAIN The possible return of live racing to the Brockton Fairgrounds has been pushed back on the calendar after the owners requested their petition for funding from the Race Horse Development Fund be pulled from the agenda for a public hearing June 23.
Kobe's Back finished third in the May 7 Churchill
Downs Stakes (gr. II) last time out for trainer Peter
Eurton after starting slow and rallying wide. The
loss came after back-to-back victories in the Palos
Verdes Stakes (gr. II) and San Carlos Stakes (gr. II)
in February and March.
Taking his sixth stab at the highest level for
C R K Stable, the 5-year-old son of Flatter could
break through to his first grade I victory in the
hands of regular jockey Gary Stevens if he comes
flying with his typical late run.
"He always shows up," Stevens said. "The ques-
tion is how he's going to perform out of the gate.
He is what he is. There's nothing I can do about it,
nothing Pete can do about.
"We just hope he breaks in the same area code

NYQUIST TO WORK BEFORE GOLD CUP CARDBy Blood-Horse Staff
Champion Nyquist, unraced since his third-place
finish in the May 21 Preakness Stakes (gr. I), will
work five furlongs prior to the first race at Santa Anita
Park June 25, according to trainer Doug O'Neill.
With first post scheduled for 1:30 p.m. PT for a
card anchored by The Gold Cup at Santa Anita (gr. I),
the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I)
winner is scheduled to come onto Santa Anita's main
track at approximately 12:45 p.m.
"It's Gold Cup Day at Santa Anita and (owner)
Paul (Reddam) feels like this is a great opportunity to
share Nyquist with all of our fans and to help pro-
mote the sport," O'Neill said.
Nyquist, whose ultimate objective this year is the
$6 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) at Santa Anita
Nov. 5, will go through Santa Anita's paddock prior to
coming onto the main track via the tunnel just east
of the winner's circle. He breezed before the races at
Keeneland this April in preparation for his Kentucky
Derby score.
A Kentucky-bred colt by Uncle Mo out of the For-
estry mare Seeking Gabrielle, Nyquist has amassed
earnings of $5,119,200. His connections have not yet
announced a definite target for his next start. BH
MOHAYMEN AIMED AT SARATOGABy Blood-Horse Staff
Shadwell Stable's multiple grade II winner Mo-
haymen returned to the worktab June 23 with a
three-furlong breeze at the Greentree Training Center
adjacent to Saratoga Race Course.
Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, the 3-year-old Tapit
colt was clocked in :36 2/5 over the all-weather sur-
face in his first timed breeze since finishing fourth in
the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).
"He worked great, galloped out in :49 and wouldn't
have blown out a match," McLaughlin said.
Mohaymen's next work is expected to be over
Saratoga's main track, which is scheduled to open for
training July 1.
McLaughlin is looking at either the $600,000 Jim
Dandy (gr. II) July 30 at Saratoga or the $1 million
Haskell Invitational (gr. I) July 31 at Monmouth Park
for Mohaymen's comeback race. His primary summer
goal is the $1.25 million Travers Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27.
Mohaymen won his first five career starts, capping
his 2-year-old season with victories in the Nashua
and Remsen (both gr. II) at Aqueduct Racetrack. He
opened 2016 with triumphs in the Holy Bull and Foun-
tain of Youth (both gr. II) at Gulfstream Park before
running fourth to eventual Kentucky Derby winner
Nyquist in the Florida Derby (gr. I) April 2. BH

FINGER LAKES HORSEMEN FACING DOUBTSBy Tom Precious
Thoroughbred trainers, owners, and breeders
are scrambling to determine the future of Finger
Lakes Gaming and Racetrack after New York lawmak-
ers ended their 2016 session without resolving how
racing will be able to compete with a commercial ca-
sino scheduled to open next year less than 30 miles
away.
"Half of the members are angry, half are in tears,"
said David Brown, president of the Finger Lakes
Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.
The industry sought special protections against
looming competition from del Lago casino, due to
open in a location a few exits away on the state Thru-
way between Rochester and Syracuse. Track sup-
porters originally requested the owners of the casino
be required to reduce cannibalization of gambling
dollars by funding a program to keep purse money
derived from video lottery terminals at 2013 levels.
Nearly 60% of Finger Lakes purses are funded by
proceeds from the track’s VLTs. The facility is expect-
ed to lose between a quarter to half its revenue when
del Lago opens.
The state set up special zones to protect tracks
located within commercial casino areas from being
financially harmed once three Las Vegas-style casinos
open. But Finger Lakes is just outside the del Lago
zone, thereby making it ineligible for the protection
funding.
After last-minute talks at the Capitol, Brown said
the situation became a stalemate.
Jeffrey Cannizzo, executive director of the New
York Thoroughbred Breeders, said del Lago ap-
proached his group with an offer to pay Finger Lakes
horsemen nearly $500,000. That was the amount del
Lago was going to have to pay Tioga Downs, a South-
ern Tier harness track within the specially created
protection zone with del Lago.
The legislature June 18 ended its 2016 session and
is not due back in Albany until January 2017.
"I'm hoping the (horsemen's) strategy has results,
specifically with Delaware North, who made out best
this legislative session while they continue to be neg-
ligent to their horsemen," Cannizzo said.
Brown said the regular purse account, not includ-
ing breed development funds, is about $16 million,
and that for every 10% loss in VLT proceeds there will
be a corresponding $1.1 million drop in the purse
account.
He added the $470,000 offered to horsemen by
del Lago was insufficient to cover what he suggests
will be a purse cut of about $4 million once del Lago
opens. He said a message was also sent from del
Lago via lobbyists: The horsemen should never ask
for more than the initial $470,000 payment, and that
the horsemen give del Lago "good publicity.’’
Brown claimed the offer was never conveyed
directly to the horsemen’s group by the owners of del
Lago.
Absent a private deal, Brown said the last hope
is to try again to get the issue on the table in state
budget deliberations next spring. BH

PAGE McKENNEY CONTINUES TO IMPROVEBy Blood-Horse Staff
There is no timetable for a return to the races
for Adam Staple and Jalin Stable's millionaire
Page McKenney, but he continues to recover from a
tendon filling that led to his scratch from the May 20
Sagamore Spirit Pimlico Special (gr. III).
Trainer Mary Eppler told Maryland Jockey Club
media officials June 23 a recent ultrasound per-
formed on the 6-year-old Pennsylvania-bred gelding
by Eavesdropper revealed no new swelling or dam-
age to the tendon.
"We try to be overly cautious with all our horses,"
Eppler said. "We did an ultrasound and it was exactly
the same as the day of the Pimlico Special, which is
good because a lot of times it can be worse—10 days
or two weeks later. So we started some treatment on
it. That'll go another two weeks, and we'll ultrasound
it again in a month."
Eppler said the gelding undergoes shock-wave
therapy.
"He's doing fine," she said. "His attitude and his
appetite are great. He's going to have a rest for prob-
ably a couple months at least, maybe up to a year.
We're just taking our time with him."
Page McKenney was claimed for $16,000 in 2013
and has made most of his $1 million-plus in earnings
since. A nine-time stakes winner; his biggest victory
came in the grade III General George Stakes at Laurel
Park in February. BH
WAVELL AVENUE SEEKS FIRST 2016 VICTORYBy Frank Angst
Last year's TwinSpires.com Breeders' Cup Filly &
Mare Sprint (gr. I) winner Wavell Avenue attempts
to get untracked in 2016 facing an expected five
other fillies and mares in the $150,000 Bed o'Roses
Handicap (gr. III) June 25 at Belmont Park.
Michael Dubb, David Simon, Head of Plains Part-
ners, and Bethlehem Stable's Wavell Avenue will look
for her first win this season when she makes her
third 2016 start in Saturday's seven-furlong test. The
5-year-old Harlington mare will carry the high weight
of 123 pounds.
Trained by Chad Brown, Wavell Avenue made her
first start since the Breeders' Cup in the Madison
Stakes (gr. I) April 9 at Keeneland, where she finished
third behind Sheer Drama and Stopchargingmaria.
She then ran fourth as the 2-1 favorite in the Huma-
na Distaff (gr. I) May 7 at Churchill Downs, finishing 8
1/4 lengths behind Taris.
At Belmont, Wavell Avenue has won half of her
previous four starts, most recently finishing second,
a half-length behind eventual champion female
sprinter La Verdad, in last year's Gallant Bloom
Handicap (gr. II).
Saturday's field also includes 2014 Frizette Stakes
(gr. I) winner By the Moon, who registered top-three
finishes in three of her past four starts, including two
grade I placings. BH

MIDAS TOUCH SOLD, ROCKRIDGE STALLIONS SHUTTLEBy Blood-Horse Staff
Three stallions from Rockridge Stud near Hudson,
NY., will ship to Uruguay for Southern Hemisphere
breeding in 2016.
Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Trin-
niberg (Teuflesberg—Bella Dorato) will shuttle to Haras
La Concordia and Haras Cuatro Piedras for the 2016
and 2017 Southern Hemisphere seasons. The deal was
brokered by Ricardo Colombo. Trinniberg previously
shuttled to Brazil in 2014, where he bred 138 mares.
Posse (Silver Deputy—Raska), among New York's
leading stallions for seven straight years, will return to
Haras Rapetti for the coming season as well.
Haras Rapetti & Associates has purchased the third
Rockridge stallion, group II winner Midas Touch (Gali-
leo—Approach), and he will ship to Uruguay for the first
time. Both Midas Touch and Posse will be under the
care of stallion manager Juan Carlos Montenegro.
"(Haras Rapetti) has shown interest in Midas Touch
since he came to us and we were hoping to work out a
shuttle arrangement," said Rockridge's owner and man-
ager Lere Visagie. "Unfortunately, the untimely death
of Midas Touch's owner, Andres Rodriguez, forced the
estate to find a buyer for him. He has found a very good
home."
The sale and shuttling agreements for both Midas
Touch and Posse were brokered by Miguel Ezcurra
Bloodstock.
Trinniberg and Posse will return to Rockridge in
December 2016 for the 2017 breeding season in New

EVACUATED HORSES HOUSED AT CA TRACKSBy Jeremy Balan
Robert Troeger couldn't escape the proximity and
immediacy of the nearby Complex fires as he
drove away from Santa Anita Park late in the after-
noon of June 22.
"We've got a front-row seat for the air show,"
said the former trainer, who now serves as Santa
Anita's stable superintendant, as he watched DC-10
airplanes drop flame retardant on the San Gabriel
Mountains that overlook the Arcadia, Calif. racetrack.
The fires, which have burned through nearly 5,000
acres since June 20 according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, have come up against many horse farms
in the San Gabriel foothill communities like Duarte,
Monrovia, Azusa, and Bradbury—and the effort to
shelter horses being evacuated from those areas has
been a concerted one.
Santa Anita has taken in 40 horses from evacuat-
ed areas, according to Troeger. Renee Hernandez, a
spokesperson for the now-closed racetrack at Fair-
plex Park in Pomona said they currently have just
under 200 horses on the grounds.
"Thank God Pomona is still there to help us out,"
Troeger said. "We'd be in a very bad situation. They
took 190 horses and we don't have the capacity in
our barn area. Right now we have 20 open stalls and
13 horses are shipping in tomorrow for races. If not
for Pomona, we'd have horses tied to trees here.
"We're all in this together. Horse people, we all
stick together. It's a very small family, but it's a great
family. Anything we can do to help, we'll do."
Hernandez added that Fairplex made 350 stalls
available in case the need to house more horses or
other large livestock should arise.
Trainer Matt Chew and his wife, Candace, had
some retired racehorses stabled at Encanto Equestri-
an Center in Duarte, which sits just southwest of Fish
Canyon, where some of the fiercest flames raged.
Chew said the farm lost two corrals to the fire, but
most importantly all 54 horses stabled there were
evacuated safely.
"It got pretty hairy. At one point we were sur-
rounded by flames," Chew said. "Just about every
facility in the area that has room is offering accom-
modations. It's nice to see everybody in the horse
community pitching in. We called (Bob) Hubbard
Horse Transportation and said we were in trouble,
and they sent two big rigs right away. Then we called
our friends and everyone showed up. What looked
like a daunting task was actually quite smooth.
"At any facility like Encanto, you have different
trainers competing for time, rings, and anything else,
but all those disputes disappeared when the crisis
was on—all that was brushed aside so we could get
the horses out safe."
As of Wednesday afternoon, local authorities
reported 10% of the fires were contained. Some
residents in Duarte were allowed to return to their
homes, according to the Tribune. BH

INTERNET CASINO GAMBLING AUTHORIZED IN PABy Tom LaMarra
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed
legislation June 22 authorizing Internet casino
gambling and more slot machines in the state, but
stopped short of approving tens of thousands of
video gaming machines for bars, taverns, and private
clubs.
The measure, which would permit slots at six
international airports and 10 off-track betting parlors
in the state, was approved on a 115-80 vote, accord-
ing to the Associated Press. It would also regulate
daily fantasy sports and, if deemed legal under fed-
eral law, sports betting.
According to reports, the state Senate could vote
on the omnibus gambling bill June 23. Lawmakers
and Gov. Tom Wolf have less than seven days to
approve a budget for the next fiscal year.
Horseracing industry organizations and casinos
opposed the plan to permit VGMs at numerous loca-
tions around Pennsylvania. Horsemen noted online
casino gambling will divert business from brick-and-
mortar casinos and thus reduce the amount of reve-
nue the industry gets for purses and breed develop-
ment programs from casino-based slot machines.
Under the legislation, slots at OTB parlors would
be limited to 250 per facility, and revenue would not
go to horse racing. The tax rate would be 54%, most
of which would be sent to the state for budgetary
purposes. BH
JUDGE GRANTS STAY TO UMAROVBy Frank Angst
Franklin, Ky. Circuit Court Judge Phillip Shepherd
granted sanctioned owner/trainer Otabek Uma-
rov a stay in his 10-year suspension June 23, until an
administrative hearing is conducted or until the court
can rule on a motion for a temporary injunction.
The stay allows Umarov to train while the admin-
istrative appeal process is concluded. However, in a
separate action brought by Churchill Downs—not the
Kentucky Horse Racing Commission—Umarov has
been banned from the Louisville, Ky. track.
Umarov was suspended for 10 years by the KHRC
after he refused to allow out-of-competition test-
ing on one of his horses—stakes winner Looks to
Spare—April 30 at Churchill. The stewards issued a
10-year suspension and $10,000 fine for violations of
out-of-competition testing rules and possession of
hypodermic needles.
In issuing the restraining order, Judge Shepherd
noted the imposition of a penalty before completion
of the appeal process would inflict immediate and
irreparable injury on the plaintiff. He further noted
the commission would retain the ability to regulate
Umarov’s conduct during this time.
The court also noted that in requesting the stay,
Umarov’s attorney Justin Fowles raised a substantial
factual question concerning whether non-compliance
with KHRC directives were knowing defiance of an
order or the result of miscommunication. The court
also said the plaintiff brought up a substantial legal
question regarding the severity of the penalty. BH

HORSE RACING COUNCIL FORMED BY HUMANE SOCIETYBy Tom LaMarra
The Humane Society of the United States, already a
member of a group supporting federal legislation
that would grant the United States Anti-Doping Agen-
cy authority over equine medication policy and drug
testing, has formed a horse racing council to promote
animal welfare standards.
The HSUS National Horse Racing Advisory Council
was announced June 23, roughly one month before a
Senate version of the Thoroughbred Horseracing In-
tegrity Act of 2015 is expected to be introduced. The
House version introduced last year was the subject of
a Congressional Horse Caucus hearing in late April.
During a media teleconference, HSUS president
and chief executive officer Wayne Pacelle said the
organization's focus, in terms of equine welfare, has
dealt primarily with horse slaughter and the prac-
tice of "soring" in the show horse world. That won't
change, he said, but horse racing will become more
of a priority.
"In the last decade or two it hasn't been a top-tier
issue, but it's moving up on the priority list," Pacelle
said. "We're going to provide considerable focus on
this issue. In spite of the efforts of a number of peo-
ple to drive reforms, there are still chronic issues in
the industry, one of which is the doping of horses."
The HSUS is a member of the Coalition for Horse
Racing Integrity.
The council, which the HSUS called a diverse group
of stakeholders, has seven members: The chair is
Joe De Francis, former chief executive officer and
controlling shareholder of the Maryland Jockey Club
and an adviser to the HSUS; Jim Gagliano, president
and chief operating officer of The Jockey Club; Stacie
Clark-Rogers, who oversees the Thoroughbred After-
care Alliance; former horse racing marketing execu-
tive Allen Gutterman; Joe Gorajec, former executive
director of the Indiana Horse Racing Commission and
now a consultant; Staci Hancock, a breeder and active
participant in racehorse aftercare; and retired jockey
Chris McCarron.
Pacelle said the current set-up of state-by-state
regulation with differing rules and standards has led
those who dope horses to go "shopping for venues to
find ways to stay ahead of regulators."
De Francis clarified the HSUS definition of "dop-
ing," as a term referring to the use of illegal substanc-
es and "use of medications that are perhaps thera-
peutic but also can be performance-enhancing and
health-threatening (for horses)."
De Francis said the federal bill and USADA would
provide a means to devise policies for therapeu-
tic drugs used for racehorse health. He added the
organization is "totally independent and unbiased,
with no conflict of interest or economic interest to be
pushing one way or another."
The federal bill as written would create the Thor-
oughbred Horseracing Anti-Doping Authority, which
would grant the USADA-shaped board power over
regulation, testing, and enforcement. It would be
comprised of the USADA chief executive officer—cur-
rently Travis Tygart—five USADA board members,
and five individuals from different constituencies of
the Thoroughbred industry appointed by USADA. BH

PREVIEWING THE SUMMER YEARLING SALESBy Ron Mitchell
Blood-Horse sales editor Ron Mitchell talks with Pat Costello, managing partner of Paramount
Sales, about the upcoming summer yearling sales. Last year, Paramount sold 199 yearlings for a total of $16,086,400, including a Street Cry colt for $1.4 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select sale.
MarketWatch: Do you think we will see a
continuation of recent trends in which there is
strength at the top of the market and greater
selectivity at other price levels?
Pat Costello: I think it’s going to be an OK
market this year, without jumping up and down
over it. I think it will continue to be very strong
at the top. There is a good feel about the busi-
ness right now, with a Triple Crown winner last
year, Nyquist coming into the Derby undefeated
and the $12 million race put up by Frank Stro-
nach. I think we will see a little more European
participation in these sales after the tremen-
dous success by American horses at Royal
Ascot. The last two or three years there have
been a slant against American horses and I think
(European buyers) have to pay attention to what
happened this year.
MW: What effect will softness within recent
2-year-old sales, and plans by pinhookers to cut
back on their purchases, have on the yearling
market?
PC: I think the 2-year-old sellers took a hit
in a lot of places and I’m not sure they will be
spending as much as this year. If they have a
good year, they’re buying with both fists but if
they have a rough year they are more reserved.
The 2-year-old sales were very selective and
it was a rough-ish market the past year there.
I’m hoping some buyers stayed away from the
2-year-old sales for one reason or another and
maybe that will help with the yearling sales.
MW: Which stallions with yearlings selling for
the first time do you think will stand out?
PC: Overall, I would say Orb, but there are a
number of sires in that bracket that it wouldn’t
surprise me if they would break out. I have seen
some absolutely smashing-looking Orbs and
Paynters. I have also seen some nice Flat Outs.
We sell for Castleton Lyons where Justin Phillip
stands and there are some very nice ones. I’ve
seen a couple of Morning Line yearlings that
look very good.
MW: Any other observations on the yearling
market?
PC: Buyers need to pay attention what they
really love about a horse. They are relying too
heavily on veterinary information which is im-
portant but sometimes the really good horse is
lost because of maybe minor veterinary stuff.
The athlete is the athlete. So many good race-
horses get missed every year because of that.
The radiographs are so good now you are see-
ing so many minor things that have no effect on
a horse’s ability to run. BH
