What is Sheltered Instruction?

Sheltered instruction is an approach for teaching CONTENT to English Language Learners (ELLs) using strategies: • that make the subject matter

easier to understand AND

• that promote the students’ English language development.

What is the SIOP Model?

Research-based framework (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol)

Identifies 8 components and 30 indicators of effective instruction in the K-12 content areas
