Silverstream School Friday 16th September 2016 Term Three, Number 4
Tena koutou Parents and Caregivers!
Safe SMART
Over the past three newsletters, I have been sharing our SMARTstreamer
Framework with you. ‘Safe SMART’ is the fourth aspect of this. As it’s name
suggests, being Safe SMART is all about being safe!
Through the Safe SMART aspect, children learn to
Work safely - following instructions, using equipment properly, thinking
before doing
Play Safely - following playground rules, taking turns, being a friend to
others
Be SMART Online - creating a positive digital footprint, following online rules, being in the
correct online space
Be Screen SMART - taking regular eye breaks, sitting properly when using a device,
getting up and moving
As you can see, the last two skill sets are specifically about being safe and smart online. Over
the past few years this has been a real focus for us as we have developed our BYOD practices in Year 4-6. By including this in our SMARTstreamer Framework, teachers and children are able to
constantly refer to positive practices to ensure we are smart online.
Your child’s learning – how you can support
Increasingly, our children use online spaces at home. This is part of being a child in the 21st Century!
When online, you can encourage your child to use the acronym T.H.I.N.K. This is a series of questions
children can ask themselves when finding information, watching video clips, playing games or
interacting with others online.
T - is it true?
H - is it helpful?
I - is it illegal?
N - is it necessary?
K - is it kind?
We recommend that you are always aware of what your child is doing on devices at home. There are
great tips for parents on the Netsafe website found at: https://www.netsafe.org.nz/advice/parenting/
Dogs on School Grounds
Thank you to everyone who is tying up their dog before entering the school
grounds.
To ensure the safety for all of our community, can we ask that all dogs are
tied to the fence in the area at the front of our school by Room 1. This is
a space in which children do not pass through as they are arriving or leaving
school. Thank you.
Year 3/4 Girls Futsal
On Monday 12 September a small group of Year 3
and 4 girls went to Walter Nash stadium for a Futsal
tournament.
They split into 3 teams and played a range of
different schools. The girls had a fantastic day out -
we certainly found some football stars in the making!
A special thanks to all the parents who helped out -
the girls wouldn't have had such a great time without
you.
Ako Nui Production "This Book's Gonna Be a Good Book..."
And it was! A huge amount of work went into preparing for this year’s production,
held at Silverstream Retreat over the last two nights. Each of our Year 5 and 6
classes chose a book to bring to life… from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The
BFG and Where the Wild Things Are to Billionaire Boy, Treehouse Stories and The
Great Piratical Rumbustification! The costumes, props and scripts along with the
amazing combination of music, dance and drama helped to make this a great success.
It was one of those occasions that makes me proud to be part of Silverstream School!
Special thanks to:
* All of our Ako Nui teachers for their vision, direction and hard work
* Mark Harrisson and the amazing team at The Silverstream Retreat
* Zac Mills * Pip McKay * Clint Craig * Aaron Work
* The fantastic Silverstream School Fundraising Team
* Parents, grandparents and whanau
* The staff and students of Silverstream School
We really appreciate all of the help and support that has gone
into making this a wonderful production!
Enrolments for 2017
Thank you to those of you who have been bringing in your enrolment forms for next
year – and reminding anyone (in zone) to do so also! It helps us so much as we start
planning for 2017.
If you do have a child who will turn 5 next year and haven’t filled in a form please
pick one up from the office or download one from our website.
Upper Hutt Kapa Haka Festival
The Kapa Haka Performance Group are looking forward to the Upper Hutt Kapa Haka Festival to be
held next Wednesday, 21st September at Lane Park in Upper Hutt.
The event begins with a whakatau at 9:30am, and then the 15 schools participating perform,
with a few breaks in-between.
Silverstream School is scheduled to perform at 1:30.
We would love to see as many of our Silverstream whanau as possible enjoying this great event.
Scrap Store
Silverstream School has an exciting announcement… Starting in Term 4 we are
introducing a new initiative to our lunchtimes. In addition to our current lunchtime
activities, we want to add an interactive play based opportunity for our students.
Four lunchtimes a week we will be opening up a “Scrap Store”. This is a shipping
container filled with a range of different items that encourage imaginative play. Other schools tell us
that the introduction of loose parts into their playgrounds has enabled children to be really creative in
their play. It enhances the physical environment, creating stimulating and interactive spaces where
children can learn through play.
Have a look at this example of a “Scrap Store” in action at another school. Scrap Store Play Pod
Our Scrap Store will be located near the school netball courts. Inside we hope to have a range of loose
parts for the children to use throughout lunchtimes. Our aim is for this to be resourced at no cost. We
already have a container being loaned to us for one term. We will require items that you may have
around your home or workplace. The kind of items we are looking for are...
Cable reels, foam noodles, tyres, tubes, fabric, tarpaulins and wooden planks… anything that can be
safely moved around, carried, rolled or lifted to create new and interesting structures and experiences.
The “Scrap Store” will be arriving on Friday 7th October. We will have it open from 1pm on this day for
you to drop any items that you can donate to us.
For further information please see or email Mrs Burrows or Miss Ferguson
Welcome to our Newest Student’s at Silverstream School
Room 22
Alaska Flintoft, Mila Scrimgeour
And welcome to our new Teachers…
Christine Janssen will be joining Angela Law in Room 22.
This class has grown and Christine will be the second teacher in Room 22 to help
cater for our latest new entrant students.
Linda Brewer will also be joining us in Room 10 four days a week.
Stacey Marshall will be reducing her hours ahead of major move with her
family to New York in January.
It is great to have you ALL at Silverstream School!
Mandarin Club Term 4
Mandarin Club has been very successful this term and Joan Spargo, our fantastic
tutor, would like to offer it again next term. She would welcome current students
back again along with any new children who would like to learn Mandarin on
Tuesdays after school.
Classes will start in the second week of Term 4 and the course will be over eight weeks.
The fees for Term 4 will be $70 for the 8 weeks. This still represents excellent value and is considerably
lower than similar language programmes.
Loud Shirt Day
Don’t forget to wear your loud shirt on Friday 23 September (or any other
loud clothing). We will be raising money to help hearing impaired children
around NZ learn to listen and to speak. Students will be asked to bring a
gold coin if they are able.
We look forward to everyone joining in the fun!
Check out http://www.loudshirtday.org.nz/ for more information.
Powhiri - Tuesday 11th October
To welcome Lisa Cavanagh, our new Principal, along with new children
and staff, we will be holding a Powhiri on
Tuesday 11 October at 9:30 am
We would like to invite the parents of all children who started at
Silverstream after our last whakatau at the beginning of Term 3.
Lunchtime Discos
Our student councillors will be holding lunchtime discos to help raise money
to cover the cost of parents attending Year 6 Camp.
There will be two gold coin donation discos on:
Friday 14 October for Year 1-3 Students
Monday 17 October for Year 4-6 Students
We thank you in advance for your support!
Teacher Only Day - Friday 21 October
As part of the work we are doing with Upper Hutt Schools around student
agency, all schools will be having a Teacher Only Day on Friday 21 October.
This has been attached to Labour weekend. Please mark this on your calendar.
Our school will remain open for those children that need to be here. We will
send a Signmee out for this at the beginning of Term 4.
BYOD Information Evening - Wednesday 19 October
Parents of our current Year 3-5 children are invited to attend an information
evening about BYOD 2017. This evening will be a presentation of some frequently
asked questions and answers about how BYOD works in Years 4-6. You will
get information about:
Why we encourage students to bring their own device
How devices are used in the classroom
The types of devices we recommend
How we develop SMART users of technology
There will also be a chance for you to ask some of your own questions about
what BYOD will mean for your child.
If you have a child moving into Year 4 next year, or you are thinking about
getting a device for your Year 5/6 child, we encourage you to come along.
The session will be about an hour long and will be held in the Learning Hub.
