DATA TRANSFER MODE
Electrons (ELECTRONIC)
eg- copper wires
Photons(PHOTONIC)
eg- Optical fibres
PHOTONS OVER ELECTRONS
electron
photon
• Photons unlike electrons
have zero mass
• Two photons coexist
together.
• Electrons unlike photons are
physical ,hence more the circuit
is complex, the more power
It requires.
ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT
A simple circuit layout.
What if the circuit is more complex?
MORE POWER CONSUMPTION!!!DATA LOSS!!INCREASED TIME!!
So, why not use photons as data transfer mode instead of electrons?
PROBLEM WITH SILICON:-
• Silicon emits heat instead of photons.
• Integration of laser source in wafer.
SOLUTION:-
InP lasers are used as light source with silicon wafer.
WHY SILICON?
Silicon shows the property of total internal
reflection. Hence silicon covered with Silicon
dioxide traps light perfectly.
SILICON PHOTONICS?
Silicon photonics is an evolving technology in
which data is transferred among computer chips
by optical rays. Optical rays can carry far more
data in less time than electrical conductors.
These devices can be built using commercial
CMOS chip fabrication facilities.
Generally a silicon integrated nanophotonics is capable of integrating a photodetector and modulator fabricated side by side with silicon transistors. Silicon nanophotonic circuits are interconnected with nine levels of yellow metal wires.

ADVANTAGE OF SILICON
PHOTONICS
High data transfer = high cost
= high power consumption
=very complex circuitry
Photonics +Electronics can together enable
solutions that can achieve higher degree of data
transfer with low cost.
