How much oil has been dumped in the ocean?
Equivalent to
76 million gallons of gasoline

145000 trips around the Earth, or
16000 trips to the Moon and back, or

WHAT IS CURRENTLY BEING DONE?
The federal government has signed off on BPs
use ofdispersants as a necessary part of the
companys damage-control strategy.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
Environmental Protection Agency
U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies
Currently BP is still using the controversial
dispersant Corexit.
There are credible concerns that the chemical will
have a negative effect on the environment.
The efficiency is also in question. 5

COREXIT DISPERSED OILS MORE TOXIC
THAN CRUDE OILS!
The standard toxicity test for chemical compounds is called the
LC50, meaning the lowest concentration at which a material kills
50% of the test animals
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency data on dispersants
provide the LC50 in parts per million. As has been earlier
reported, Corexit, the compound chosen by BP, has some of the
lowest LD50 numbers on the list, meaning that its among the
most poisonous. Also, its among the least effective on Louisiana
crude (the type flowing from the Deepwater break).

ABRIEFDEFINITIONOF DISPERSANTS
Dispersants are generally surfactants (shortened from
surface activeagents) mixed with solvents. Your laundry
detergents success is an example of an effective surfactant,
and its why dirt releases from your dampened clothes. The
dispersants are effective in watery, saturated
conditions
When mixed with treated water like that used as a
dilution medium for the concentrated dispersants in the
Gulf, even basic surfactant-laden household detergents canbecome carcinogenic products or help other chemicals to
do so

NEGATIVEEFFECTS: PHYSICAL
Corexit and other chemicals currently being used leave oil
and solvent in remnant water.
Oil is rendered irreclaimable and unrecyclable.
8
8/3/2019 Sifchem surfactant oil collector slides
9/30
NEGATIVEEFFECTS: ECOLOGICAL
1. Reportedly Corexit may be toxic to marine life and helps keep
spilled oil submerged.
2. There is concern that the quantities used in the Gulf will create
unprecedented underwater damage to organisms.
3. Oil mixed with Corexit is more toxic to marine life because
the dispersant allows the oil to stay submerged below the surface
of the water. Corexit 9500 causes oil to form into small droplets
in the water; fish may be harmed when they eat these
droplets.
4. According to its Material safety data sheet, Corexit may also
bioaccumulate, remaining in the flesh and building up over
time, then migrate up through food chain until reaching human. 9

OILDISPERSANTS: ANENVIRONMENTAL
CRAPSHOOT.
Dispersants themselves are toxic. But a bigger concern is what happens in
dispersing the oil, which is far more hazardous to living creatures
Unprecedented, untested: 55,000
gallons injected into some 5,000 feetbelow the surface
Deep sea mystery and dead zones:
The conditions at the bottom of the
Gulf also could affect the bacteria
that help break down the oil nearthe surface and it will remain toxic
for much longer.

CAPPINGIS NOT THEFULLSOLUTION
Capping might stop the flow of fresh oil, though
even that is uncertain. There is still a huge task
ahead.
Capping it today will not reverse what mischief
has already been set loose in the form of these
surfactants (dispersants) as they mix, as the new
chemical compositions cascade throughout theGulfs very complex ecosystems.

SF-332 PRODUCTSHEET
SF-332 is a highly effective fluorinated surfactant compound with a number of
applications characterized by several key benefits including low surface tension,
wetting, and leveling. The product gathers oil quickly and efficiently with minimal
residual toxicity. When a marine oil spill occurs, it spreads to cover large areas of
the oceans surface polluting the water environment and harming biological
elements. Spreading a little amount of this fluorinated surfactant will greatlyreduce water surface tension forming a thick oil layer for rapid and thorough
collection.
