You Are Welcome Here
Welcome to long-time Lutherans, Christians from every tradition, and people new to the faith. Welcome to all who have no church home, want to follow Jesus, have doubts, or do not believe.
Welcome to new visitors and old friends. Welcome especially to all who have ever been made to feel unwelcome by the church.
Welcome to people of every age and size, color and culture, marital status, ability and challenge, sexual orientation and gender identity. We want to be clear that we welcome lesbian, gay,
bi-sexual, and transgender persons to participate in the life of the congregation. Welcome to believers, questioners, and questioning believers.
This is a place where you are welcome to celebrate and grieve, to rejoice and recover. No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here. This is a place where lives are made new.
Come and see!
Shepherd’s Voice 4
for being willing to work in part-
nership with me on certain pro-
grams and events;
for being bold to call me at home
for matters urgent or important;
for a relatively small number of
“I’m-sorry-to-bother-you-at-
home-Pastor...” phone calls;
for compensation and benefits I
have experienced as generous
(e.g. additional week of vacation
every 5 years, sabbatical);
for making an aging pastor’s ride
into the sunset “a good ride,”
even a time of growing for him.
We have accomplished so much together:
IHN/Family Promise for 12 years;
built a new building, remodeled an
older one, and fixed the Ministry
Center roof;
turned a potentially difficult period
of exile (9months worshiping at
Q&D) into a time of growth and
increased participation as we
pulled together;
Journey with Christ process of
adult faith formation;
Statement of Welcome and Rec-
onciling in Christ process;
Men’s Ministry;
Good Grief Team;
gathered an excellent staff;
much, much more.
I will miss being the Body of Christ with
you. I will always be grateful for all the
ways you have cared for me, Dianne, and
our family.
A Message From Pr. Carl
Dear Friends of the Good Shepherd:
As we move toward my June 29 retirement day/last Sunday at
Good Shepherd, I want to give you some tips on caring for your new
pastor: of course, your new pastor will be a unique individual, and
neither I nor anyone else can give you a helpful recipe for her/his
care. You will have to figure much of it out for yourself.
But please listen carefully as I express my gratitude for ways this
congregation has taken good care of me and my family over these
14 years. Some of this information might be helpful as you prepare
to care well for your next pastor.
Thank you, Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd,
for allowing me some time (3 weeks) between leaving my
previous (for 20 years) call and home, and beginning my
work here. My physical and emotional well-being improved
during that sabbath time;
for being patient with me in so many ways: in those early
months and years with my slowness in understanding you;
throughout my time here with my personality quirks and foi-
bles (especially staff colleagues who dealt with those almost
daily – but you’ll miss me when I’m gone!);
for being alert and proactive in celebrating joys in our family
life (grandson #1 Sam’s birth in 2010 produced a surprise
party/shower for Dianne and me; a quilt from our quilters;
and Sam has two trains and some trucks hand-made from
wood by Al and Maggie Fisher; and many of you have gener-
ously spent time looking at pictures of Sam on my I-phone.);
for acknowledging and even celebrating my humanity
(rounds of golf together, “email buddies,” both female and
male, who share humor of various “colors”);
for the ongoing “sermon conversation,” as various ones of
you comment, email, and converse about something from a
sermon that “made you think.” (The job of a preacher –
my view – is to stimulate the conversation between people
and God, and I appreciate knowing if and how that hap-
pened. I will miss this part of my work as pastor.);
for taking Jesus as seriously as you do;
for spending yourselves in the work Jesus calls us to do
together (I have discovered here a congregation filled with
people eager to offer their time, talent, and treasure to the
work of Christ. I hope you understand how much of an
encouragement you have been to your pastor, and will be to
the next pastor!);
MINISTRIES
OWLS : A Seniors’ Ministry Older Wiser Lutheran Singles) (This report was received in time but inadvertently left out of our 2013 Report to the Congregation. We include it here with apologies.)
This exciting ministry at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd is
for anyone who is single, divorced, widowed, has an empty nest or
just wants to socialize with other people! Although OWLS stands
for Older Wiser Lutheran Singles, age isn’t a factor...it IS for
anyone in our Congregation.
The OWLS Ministry began in 2009 here at Good Shepherd with just
three individuals and has grown each year since. During the past
year, the OWLS ministry has increased and now enjoys a member-
ship of approximately 30. One of the goals of the OWLS is to pro-
vide support for those who are recently divorced or widowed, as
well as fellowship on a regular ongoing basis.
The OWLS from our church family meet the third Wednesday of
each month, choosing to have dinner at varying restaurants
throughout the year. Selection of meeting places is usually done at
the November dinner with everyone having input into the
choices. Themed dinners follow the calendar events: March – Irish
for St. Patrick’s Day, May – Mexican for Cinco De Mayo, October –
German for Ocktoberfest. Average attendance for the monthly
dinners varies from 12 to 16.
Joining together with the Rebekah Circle and the Quilters, this year,
the OWLS ministry had a Christmas Pot Luck at church in mid
December. The group chose to share the blessings of the Christ-
mas season with the Good Shepherd Clothes Closet by providing
stuffed toys for many of the children from the Good Shepherd
Clothes Closet.
Please consider joining us for an evening of fun and fellowship. A
monthly schedule of dates and restaurants is on file in the church
office. For more information contact Linda Fearnley: 747-9867. Linda Fearnley, OWLS Coordinator
Ladies’ Bunco
A new ministry group has begun at
church! Ladies Bunco meets in
Shepherd Hall every 4th Monday of
the month from 3-5 pm. Join the
fun! Please RSVP to participate by

Coffee Hour News!
We want to send a huge thank you to
Dee Frahman who has been serving as
the Coffee Hour Coordinator since we
moved into our new kitchen! She has
done a fantastic job of creating a warm
and inviting space for fellowship. Dee is
stepping down from this position to have
a more flexible schedule—her grandchil-
dren are moving to town! This makes
room for some others of you to take a
leadership role! We are breaking the job
into two positions: Early and Late. Early
host gets out the goodies/coffee and
manages the space (8:15-10:15am.) Late
host maintains a stock of goodies/coffee
and cleans up afterward(10:15-12:30pm.)
We are looking for 4 hosts for Early and
Late so you would serve once a month.
See the sign up sheet if you can help us
out.
The church is also making some changes
regarding the coffee hour goodies. We
love the muffins/rolls/breads. We want
to continue this but with a new ap-
proach! Long, long ago...we used to ask
our congregation to consider bringing
donuts/cookies/breads for coffee hour
once a year during your birthday month.
You’ll find a sign up sheet on the coffee
hour table. Sign if you are willing to
bring treats. (We’ll have treats in re-
serve for Sundays when no one has
signed up.) This is not a “have to!” This
is a “get to!”
We continue to purchase local coffee
from Blind Dog. We have had favorable
comments on the taste and quality. It
does cost a bit more but we want to
support local businesses as much as we
can. If you can put some spare change
in the coffee hour basket, it helps offset
that cost. If you have questions, please
see Deanna. Thank you!

There’s a new word floating around the
church circles these days. When you

for the church, you
VOLUNTEER.
When the Pastor tells you to do a task
for the church you have been
VOLUN-TOLD!

St. Patrick’s Day Party
A big THANK YOU to everyone who donated items
and/or volunteered at the St. Patrick’s Day Party at
the Family Shelter this month. It was a wonderful
afternoon! It was so rewarding seeing the kids and
parents so engaged in all the activities. Some of the
parents seemed to enjoy making Rainbow Loom
bracelets and coloring Leprechauns as much as their
kids! The St. Patrick’s Party was a first at the fam-
ily shelter. Many groups reach out to the family
shelter at Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas,
but not as much during other times of the year. With
the success of this event, the St. Patrick’s Party
may become an annual tradition for Good Shepherd!

deaths from this disease-for good. When you give,
your gifts will be matched through a $1 for $1
challenge grant. Money raised will help expand work
into the next country - Namibia. If our ELCA congre-
gations can raise $250,000, we'll have enough to kick
-start programming in Namibia, the last country of
the ELCA’s rollout plan. Our church will recognize
World Malaria Day on April 27. Look for special giving
envelopes on the Welcoming Space table.
Shepherd’s Voice 13
Advocacy in Nevada took a historic step forward in March, 2014.
That’s when LEAN, Lutheran-Episcopal Advocacy in Nevada,
was officially created. Lutherans and Episcopalians have col-
laborated in many ways in the past, but this new joint venture to
do advocacy is the first of its kind anywhere. It is the result of
conversations between former Bishop Mark Hanson of the ELCA
and Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefferts-Schori of the Episcopal
Church in America. Many will recall that Bishop Jefferts-Schori
was the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Nevada before mov-
ing up to nationwide office. While in Nevada, Bishop Katherine
learned of the work of Lutheran Advocacy Ministry in Nevada
and of the network of Lutheran State Public Policy offices
around the country. Episcopalians have a nationwide advocacy
network to address federal legislation, just as Lutherans do, but
advocacy at the state level is new to them. Bishop Katherine
and Bishop Hanson were aware of Religious Alliance in Nevada
(RAIN), an entity that is unique to Nevada. This collaboration of
five mainline denominations has really amplified the voice of the
faith community on behalf of those who cannot speak for them-
selves. The new Lutheran Bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, is now work-
ing with Bishop Katherine, to launch Lutheran-Episcopal Advo-
cacy in Nevada. It is hoped that LEAN will become a model for
other states.
LEAN will base its policy positions on church teachings, just as
LAMN always did. It will have all the position papers and decla-
rations of the Episcopal Church, as well as the ELCA Social
Statements, to work from. LEAN will use these rich resources in
a slightly different way than LAMN did. Each Lutheran and Epis-
copalian parish will have LEAN representatives, called
“Communicators,” who will listen to the concerns of the parish-
ioners, lead discussion on issues, and carry the concerns forward
to the LEAN Board. This is a more “grass roots” model, and it is
hoped that lively discussion and greater involvement will result.
In 2005, Bishop Mark Hanson published
a book titled, “Faithful and Coura-
geous: Christians in Unsettling
Times.” In the book Bishop Mark talks
about how the Bible’s guidance on
personal behavior is pretty under-
standable, but when it comes to public
life, the issues can be very complex,
and today’s society has few abso-
lutes. We face ethical dilemmas that
were unheard of by our forbears. In
this setting, we are called to be com-
munities of ethical discernment. This
means prayerful searching for and lis-
tening to God’s direction. We hope
the Communicators will facilitate the
process, and that the advocacy agenda
that comes out of it will represent
both consensus and God’s will.
The need for discernment was reiter-
ated recently when Presiding Bishop
Eaton reminded the Conference of
Bishops that it is critical for church
leaders to “understand ourselves as
communities of spiritual discernment.
It is not just about strategic plans.”
You will be hearing much more about
LEAN in coming days. The website for
LEAN is still under construction, but
for a “sneak peek,” go to
www.leanforjustice.org, to find details
on this exciting new advocacy effort.

FINANCIALS
Great News from... “Continuing Our Journey Together” Capital Campaign
This March the Continuing Our Journey Together capital campaign
received an anonymous gift of $285,000. This gift is restricted to
pay down of loan balance principal. By paying down the principal
balance of our loan, we save thousands of dollars of interest in the
coming years.
The $285,000 gift we just received is so amazing, generous,
thoughtful and astounding! We are so grateful to this donor who
rejoices with us in the wonderful worship, welcome and gathering
places we now enjoy!
Paying down the principal on a loan does not change the terms of
the loan. Our monthly mortgage payment remains at $9,450. Just
to review, we took out a $1.5 million loan from Mission Investment
Fund. The loan is amortized over 20 years, with an interest rate
adjustment at year 7, which will be 2019. Our current interest rate
is 4.625%. The new balance on our loan, after applying $285,000, is
just under $1 million.
The Lord is guiding us and is with us. Thanks be to God!

Our new Governing Board treasurer, Steve Solberg, has re-
quested an Audit of our financials prior to Pr. Carl’s retire-
ment. The Governing Board has appointed Mary Hettinger,
Jerry Mullen and Sheila Freed to conduct the Audit. The
process is now underway. Stay tuned for their report.
Easter Offerings During the Easter season, it is encouraging
to see both new and familiar faces at our worship services.
Throughout the year, many of you already support the con-
gregation with your time, talent and financial contributions
but greater participation is always welcome. We encourage
you to look into our electronic giving program. It takes just a
few minutes to setup a recurring giving plan. Visit the church
website and locate the donation link or complete a paper
authorization form.

Saying Your Goodbyes
Some folks hate it! Some folks just plain refuse to do it!
Some folks need it a whole bunch! Some folks simply say
“....til we meet again!” Wherever you are in that spectrum,
please note that it is up to you to determine how you want to
say goodbye. Please note: Pr. Carl and Dianne will NOT be
greeting worshipers on his final Sunday, June 29 as wor-
shiper’s exit. We expect full houses at both worship services.
Plan to say your “goodbyes” prior to worship or Friday at the
Open House or privately over lunch, or through a card or note
to Pr. Carl.
