SETTINGUPFORSUCCESS

PositioningtheSheepAutoDrafterItisrecommendedforbestperformancethattheSheepAutoDrafterismountedonahard,level,flatsurface.Ideally,particularlyforpermanentinstallations,aconcretepadofapproximately900cm(wide)by2600cm(length)shouldbelaidtofittheSheepAutoDrafterandasinglesortingunit.Theyshouldbeboltedtoitusingthemountingholesprovided(seeFigure3).Itisrecommendedthat4M10x125mmmasonryanchorswith10mmx25mmflatwashersandamasonrydrill(bitsizeof10mm)areusedtoattachtheSheepAutoDrafterandsortingunit.Apermanentmountingalsoallowsfortheoptimisationofsurroundingyardsandracestoefficientlyfeedstockintotheweighinganddraftingsetup.

Figure3.Mountinghole.

PowerandcompressedairrequirementsBothpowerandcompressedairarenecessarytooperatetheSheepAutoDrafterandsortingunit.Anairsupplyisneededtooperatetheunitentryandexitgatesandalsothedraftinggates.

Power requirements TheSheepAutoDrafterispoweredbyanexternal230Vto12VDCadaptor.ThiscomesaspartofthepackagewhenyoubuytheSheepAutoDrafterandcanbeconnectedtoyourACpowersupply(inputrange100240VAC).

YoucanalsoruntheSheepAutoDrafteroffa12VDCbatterye.g.acarbattery,wherethereisnoconventionalpowersupply.

IfyouhaveascaleindicatororaRFIDreaderattachedtotheSheepAutoDraftertheywillneedtobepoweredseparately(bytheirownbatteries)asnopowersupplyrunstothemfromtheunit.

Note:IfyouarewantingtoreadEIDsthenmakesureyoukeepthepowersupply1m,ormore,awayfromtheunitsidepanelstoavoidinterferencewiththeRFIDreaderantennae.

Compressed air requirements OncethecompressorisconnectedandrunningyouwillbeabletoseewhatthepressureisattheunitbylookingatthepressuregaugeattachedtotheControlBridge(seeFigure4).Itshouldreadbetween46bar(inthegreenzone).Ensureitdoesnotentertheredzone(>6bar).Areadingabove6barindicatesaregulatorissue,whichwouldneedinvestigation.Readingsbelow4bararelikelytobecausedbyanairsupply(compressor)problem.Atypicalcompressorwouldbea2HP24litretanksinglephasemachine.

Figure4.Pressuregauge(ontheControlBridge).

ScalesandRFIDreaderrequirementsTheSheepAutoDrafterhasbeenspecificallydesignedtooperatewiththeGallagherSmartTSi,SmartScale800,WeighScale810andWeighScale610scales.(Pleasenote:DraftingbylistisnotavailableontheWeighScale610scale.)Itwillalsooperatewithsomeotherbrandsofweighingindicatorsyourdealerwillknowwhicharecompatible.

RFID(radiofrequencyidentification)antennaeareinstalledineachoftheunitsidepanels.ASmartReaderBRorRunitisneededtocommunicatewiththeantennae.

TheantennaewillrecogniseEIDwhichareeitherHDX(halfduplex)orFDX(fullduplex),andthosewhichareinsertedasimplantsorboluses(howeverthesearelesscommonlyused).

Recommendationsfortheconstructionanduseofsurroundingyardsandraces

(adaptedfrom"BehavioralPrinciplesofLivestockHandling"byTempleGrandin)

RaceconstructionleadinguptotheSheepAutoDrafterSides

Sheephaveawidevisualfield.Thewidthisaffectedbytheamountofwooltheyhaveontheirheadandrangesfrom191to306degrees.Anyhandlingraces,includingtheraceleadinguptotheSheepAutoDrafter,shouldhavesolidsidewallstopreventanimalsfromseeingdistractionsoutsidetherace.Anymovingobjects,(e.g.people,flappingobjectsoracoathungonaracefence)seenthroughthesidesofaracecancausebalkingorfrightensheep.Solidsidewallsareespeciallyimportantifanimalsareunaccustomedtothefacility.

Layout CurvedsinglefileracesarerecommendedformovingsheepuptotheSheepAutoDrafter.Acurvedraceismoreefficientfortworeasons.Firstly,itpreventstheanimalfromseeingwhatisattheotherendoftheraceuntilitisalmostthere.Secondly,ittakesadvantageofthenaturaltendencyofsheeptocirclearoundahandlermovingalongtheinnerradiusoftherace.

Width IdeallytheracewillbedesignedinawaythatorganisessheepintosinglefilebythetimetheyreachthejunctionwiththeSheepAutoDrafter.ThishelpstoensurethatonlyonesheepenterstheSheepAutoDrafteratatimeandmakesstockflowsmoother.Assheepcanbeofvaryingsizes,(e.g.adultsheepandlambs),itisusefultohavearacewithadjustablesidesinthefinalleadup(thelast180cm).Howeveriftheracewidthisfixed,approximately50cmistherecommendedwidth.ThisisthesamedimensionastheinternaledgeoftheSheepAutoDrafterentrygatesurround.

Materials ThematerialsthesurroundingracesaremadeofhavethepotentialtoaffectthereliabilityoftheRFIDreader.Metalcomponentsarebestavoidedifpossible,particularlyiftheyrubtogether,asthiscancauseinterferenceinthesignalbetweenthereaderandtheEID.

Vision and lighting WheretheSheepAutoDrafterispositionedilluminationshouldbeuniformanddiffuse,muchlikeabrightcloudyday.Shadowsandbrightspotsshouldbeminimised.

Sheephaveatendencytomovefromdimareastobrighterareas,providedthelightisnotglaringintheireyes.SituatetheSheepAutoDraftertotakeadvantageofnaturallight.Skylights,combinedwithothernaturallighting,canevenout

 Page13

lightlevelssoconsiderinstallingtranslucentpolycarbonateroofingandorwallsiftheareaisdark.

Noise Infacilitieswherelivestockarehandled,loudornovelnoisesshouldbeavoidedbecausetheydistresslivestock.Thesoundofmetalclashingtogethercancausebalkingandagitation.AstheSheepAutoDrafterisconstructedofcompositematerialsitsoperationisveryquietbutthenoiselevelinthesurroundingyardsshouldbeconsidered.ThecompressorprovidingairfortheSheepAutoDrafterisbestlocatedatadistancetoreducenoiselevels.RubberstopsongatesintheyardsaroundtheSheepAutoDrafterwillhelpreducenoise.

The effects of pain or fright Researchindicatesthatsheepcanrememberapainfulorfrighteningexperienceformanymonths.Sheepwhichhadbeeninvertedinasheephandlingmachineweremoredifficulttomovethroughthemachinethefollowingyear1.ThefactthattheSheepAutoDrafterhasbeendesignedwiththecomfortandsafetyofstockinmindwillhelptoensureanimals'experienceofthemispositive.Thiswillaidinthesmoothentryandflowofstockthroughthesystemonfutureoccasions.

Itisalsoworthwhilekeepinginmindthatlivestockwhichhavehadgentlehandlinginthepastwillbelessstressedwhentheyarehandledinthefuture.Thinkabouthowyouractionswillaffectyourfutureinteractionswithstockandtheefficiencyoftheoperationsyouwishtocarryout.

MovingtheSheepAutoDrafterAstheSheepAutoDrafterisverylight(~100kg),duetoitsconstructionfromcompositematerials,itcanbeliftedmanuallybytwopeople.

Note:MakesureyouhavethesidepanelsattachedwhenyoushifttheSheepAutoDrafterandthattheyareontheinsideslot.Also,closethegatesateitherend.
