Maison Dada in Shanghai

Maison Dada, Design Editor since 2015, was created in Shanghai by Designer Thomas Dariel and Delphine Moreau.

Maison Dada was born out of the wild dream to inject a dose of Dadaism into our everyday life. Maison Dada develops furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories with in mind the desire to create the unexpected from ordinary objects, the will to harmonize dreams and reality.

DADA IS A STATE OF MIND

Collages, inventions, re-appropria-tions : Maison Dada creates objects that are gently crazy, defying cer-tainty, taste and gravity. The style is poetic, bold, playful, daring and based on the belief that everybody deserve inspiring and meaningful design.

Maison Dada artistic direction is in the hands of Thomas Dariel who leads its creative potential through his own design pieces and the supervision on the overall design selection.

Maison Dada takes its name from Dadaism.

This is for me one of the most significant art movements of the 20th century; as I consider it to be the foundation of contemporary design, contemporary art and a contemporary way of thinking. Dada is a state of mind. That freedom is part of my

signature, even for interior design. Maison

imagination that brings life into objects. I don’t

want unanimated furniture. I like them

to have a soul, to tell a story.

Japanese Abstractions is a collection of six pieces, all designed around the concept of the imaginary trip to Japan of the Dadaist and feminist artist Sophie Taeuber Arp. Each rug is a combination of geometric shapes and traditional Japanese patterns, a result of the unexpected yet poetic encounter between pure abstraction and cultural influences, between West and East.

The South-Korea capital is known for its Thirty-one bridges spanning the vast Hangang River. The collection was born from this idea: the view one may have from the sky looking over Seoul, the graphic and natural patterns created by the river winding its way through the City and crossed by a multitude of bridges connecting both banks and their inhabitants. A cartographic reference that is also translated through the rugs’ mix of materials and thickness variation, the fragility of the silk lines contrasting with large wool geometrical tint areas.

Vibration, perspective, energy, Shanghai By Night is an interpretation of what could define the gigantic City that is Shanghai. While geometrical shapes and pure lines empower the pieces with masculinity, pastel shades and roundness soothe this strength at first sight by bringing softness and poesy. As much as Shanghai and its everlasting contrasts, the rugs feature a combination of opposite elements, which, well balanced, finally lead to harmony.

Collection 2018/ Autumn in New York

Vibrant, electric, blunt and gritty, this capsule collection – based on Sophie Dariel’s illustrations - features seven pieces that bring back New York’s autumn memories. While the graphic patterns of the background reflect that whatever the season the city exist in black and white to the great tunes of jazz, the rugs as well depict why the town is at its best during the cool days of autumn. Wandering through Central Park, the gingko trees turning bright yellow against the high blue skies, everything crisp and golden as an apple. Autumn in New York collection captures these dreamlike images. Juicy autumnal fruits, glowing foliage and explosion of colors…a graphic answer to Billie Holiday’s question “Autumn in New York, what does it seem so inviting?”

Collection 2018/ Autumn in New York

As great grandson of french furniture designer, Pierre Dariel grandson of a jazz musician and son of an architect, Thomas Dariel has always drawn his strength and inspiration from his family heritage.

Recognized for his very personal creative style, his habit to push boundaries and to provoke and surprise, Dariel founded multi-award winning interior design firm Dariel Studio in 2006 in Shanghai.

He has since earned the praise of the design industry. He has received several awards, among them selection for Best International Interior Designer – 2012 Andrew Martin Awards, awarded Top 100 talents in Architecture and Design – 2017, 2015 and 2013 AD Magazine, Top 40 Young Design Talents under 40 – 2013 Perspective 40 Under 40, Top 10 Best Designer in China – Vantage Magazine 2016. In 2017, Thomas Dariel has been elected Best Young Designer of the Year by EDIDA Awards and Best Designer of the Year by Trends and Trendshome magazines.

Dariel draws his creativity from the different worlds of design, fashion, visual arts and luxury. His design philosophy is driven by his passion for breaking traditional codes and clichés, which creates a new language for each design. By confronting heritage and cutting-edge innovations, combining French design heritage with Eastern cultural influence, Dariel’s open approach unfolds original perspectives.

A singular signature that he has extended with success to product design, signing with - among others - Cappellini and Moroso. In 2015 and while pursuing his interior design activity, Dariel decided to revive a childhood’s dream by launching his own brand of furniture, lighting, rugs and accessories, Maison Dada.

Designer / Thomas Dariel

Artist, technician, photographer, designer, video artist, Levy's skills are multi-disciplinary and his work can be seen in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide. Best known publicly for his sculptures – such as his signature Rock pieces –, his installations, limited editions and design, Levy nevertheless feels “The world is about people, not objects.” Hailing originally from Israel and moving to Europe after his first participation in a group sculpture exhibition in Tel-Aviv in 1986, Levy currently works in his studio in Paris. His formation was unconventional where surfing, as well as his art and graphic design studio, took up much of his time back home. Following studies at the Art center Europe in Switzerland he gained a distinction in Industrial Design in 1991. After a stint of four months in Japan where he consolidated his ideas producing products and pieces for exhibitions, Levy then returned to Europe where he contributed his artistry to other fields like contemporary dance and opera by way of stage installation, lighting, video and more. The creation of his studio then meant a foray back to his first love, art and design, where design was a vehicle of science, technology and materials that can be seen in Levy’s artworks as well as other branches of his talents. Considering himself now more of a "feeling" artist, Arik Levy continues to contribute substantially to our interior and exterior milieu, his work including public sculpture, as well as complete environments that can be adapted for multi use. "Life is a system of signs and symbols," he says, “where nothing is quite as it seems."

Chen Furong, Founder of furniture brand WUU, dedicated himself to develop contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories, while continuing to participate in art and design projects. In 2015, he has been awarded as Best Chinese Emerging Designer by Design Shanghai.Chen and his brand WUU have been invited to 100% Design, Milan Design Week and many other major exhibitions.
