- Pattern yourselves after me [follow my example], as I imitate and follow Christ (the

Messiah). - 1 Cor. 11:1 Amp - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the

same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also. -2 Tim. 2:1-2

SCRIPTURES

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” -

Isaac Newton

The best way to really train people

is with an experienced

mentor... and on the job. -Tom

Peters

Quote

• Mentoring is a personal developmental relationship in

which a more experienced person helps a less experienced…

• It’s when someone takes the role of a trusted adviser, supporter,

teacher and counselor to another individual or group with the sole aim of the mentor developing the

mentee.

Technical Skill Acquisition is short-term. Experience Acquisition is long-term…

WHY?

Things to Look for in a Mentor

1. Experience

2. Character & Good

Reputation for

developing others

3. Similar Goals

4. Availability 5. Open-mindedness 6. Caring & desiring to help 7. Positive

8. Focus 9. Believes in You 10. Honest

Benefits for the Protégé • A non-threatening

learning opportunity

• Improved self-confidence

• Developing expertise & technical knowledge

• Challenge

• Listening, support and reassurance

• Networking/partnership opportunities

Tips for Protégés • Be affirmative about where you’re

going in life

• Create clear expectations from the beginning of the mentoring relationship

• Have multiple mentors for different aspects of your life… i.e. business, marriage, finance, etc.

• Never ask for money from your mentor

• Don’t waste a mentor’s time – physical presence, lengthy e-mails, lengthy telephone conversation, irrelevant talks when meeting, etc.

• Ensure a constant feedback on tasks, counsels, advice, etc. given to you

• Continuously evaluate what you’re gaining versus your set goals

• Occasionally give to your mentor

– Not necessarily something very big and expensive but what is useful and presentable to the mentor e.g. books, CD/DVD, Souvenirs, etc.

So please, take it from me: no matter how incredibly

smart you think you are, or how brilliant, disruptive or plain off-the-wall your new

concept might be, every start-up team needs at least one good mentor. Someone,

somewhere, has already been through what you are convinced nobody else has ever confronted! - Richard

Branson
