BackgroundLocatedinGloucester,VA,ThousandTrailsChesapeakeBayisanRVcampsiteandoutdoorpreservewithover350fullhookupsitesand25rentalcabins.Thesitealsohousesrecreationalandpublicfacilities,suchaslodges,aswimmingpool,publicrestroomsandadumpingstationforRVsewage.

RVsewersites,cabinsandpublicfacilitiesthroughoutthepropertydischargetoliftstationsthatpumptooneoftwoseparateseptictank/leachfieldsystems.Fourlocationswereselectedforthetrialofanewbiocatalysttechnologythatspeedsupbiochemicalreactionssignificantlyfasterthanunaidedprocessesorcurrenttechnologies.Thetechnologyhasbeenprovenasaneffectivewastewatertreatmentsolutionoverseas,includingAustralia,AsiaandEurope,andthetrialaimedtovalidatetheseresultsintheUnitedStates.Theparkwasclosedthroughoutthetrial-onlyafewsiteswereoccupiedbyemployeesandseasonaloccupants.

TheESectionseptictank/leachfieldsystemreceivesmostofthislow-flowvolume.Inaddition,thereisalowdailyinflowtotheonlyopenpublicrestroom,locatedinSectionB.AliftstationinSectionDthatdischargestotheESectiontankswasselectedfortrialduetoaconsistentproblemwithodor.TheseptictankdetailsareshowninTable1.

Priortothetrial,strongsepticodorsintheimmediatevicinityofDSectionliftstationwereobserved.Inaddition,visiblefloatingsludgeinESectionsludgetankandBSectionbathroomtankwasnoticed.BiOWiSHTechnologiesapproachedthecampsiteownerandoperatorwithaproposaltovalidatetheeffectivenessofthebiocatalystinreducingodorswithinthesite,aswellasreducingthestrengthofeffluentintheseptictanks.

Thebiocatalystcombinesproprietaryenzymes,cofactorsandnutrientstosignificantlyenhancedegradationratesfororganicwastes.Thisleadstosuperiorreductionsinodor,volatileorganiccompounds(VOC),biologicaloxygendemand(BOD),chemicaloxygendemand(COD),andoverallsolidwaste.Deliveredinactivemicrobialform,thetechnologyacceleratesthebreakdownoforganicwastesandodorousemissionsintoharmlessandodorlesscompounds,suchascarbondioxide,nitrogengasandwater.Itis100-percentnatural,non-toxicandsafeforeverydayuseinaverydiverserangeofconsumerandindustrialproducts.

Itsprovencapabilitieshelpsolveproblemsinenvironmentalwastemanagement(includingwastewater,solidwaste,soilandwaterremediation,industrialemissions),cropping,animalagricultureandaquaculture.

1.Toreducesolids,BODandnitratesintheseptic/leachfieldsystems

2.ToreduceodorattheDSectionliftstation

Inordertocharacterizethecauseoftheodors,pretreatedsampleswerecollectedattheeffluentsectionoftheESectiontankandanalyzedinthelaboratory.Theresultsoftheanalysis(allvaluesinmg/Lexceptturbidity,whichismeasuredinNTU)arepresentedinTable2.

Deliveredinfreeze-driedpowder,thebiocatalystwasmixedwithwaterforreactivation.Eachdosewasprebatchedinfivegallon(18L)bucketsataconcentrationofone100gbagperbucket(seeTable3).ThebucketswerefiledwithwaterandincubatedindoorsabovelO0Covernight(uncovered).Thepre-batcheddoseswereappliedtotheESectiontankandtheDSectionliftstationdirectlyintothetanksthroughlids.TheBSectionbathhousetankdosewasappliedthroughthetoilet.ThedosesappliedtotheESectiontankweredoneintwobatchesonconsecutivedays,duetothehighpre-mixvolume(seeTable4).

Study outcomesAfteronly34days,MaintenanceSupervisorHughKeithreportedasignificantbreakupofthefattysludgeintheESectionsludgetank.HealsoreportedthattheodorattheDSectionliftstationwasnearlyeliminated.Analyticalresultsforposttreatmentsamples(seeFigure1),collectedonday34attheESectioneffluenttank(allvaluesinmg/Lexceptforturbidity,whichisinNTU)showedtheseoutcomes.

Byacceleratingthedigestionofwastethroughanenhancedenzymaticprocess,thenewtechnologyreducedthevolumeofactivatedsludgerequiredtotreataconstantloading.Asaresult,theequilbriumsludgeconcentrationwasreduced,andlesssludgebuildupshouldoccuroverthelongterm.Inaddition,byalteringthespeciationofenzymeswithinthesystem,theodorwasreduced.Odorreductionwasachievedbothbyalteringthebiotransformationpathwaysandbyenablingtheco-metabolismofodorouschemicalcompounds.Inlaymansterms,lessodorwascreatedinthefirstplace,andtheodorthatwascreatedwastheneatenbythebiocatalysts.Theentireresultwasachievedwithoutanycapitalinvestmentorotheralterationoftheproperty’sexistinginfrastructure.

Anticipated long-term outcomesItisanticipatedthatcontinuedmonthlydosingoftheseptictankswouldbreakupsolidsatthetopandbottomoftheliquidsineachtanktocontrolodorandminimizetheneedtopumpsludgefromthetanks.OdorintheDSectionliftstationcanbecontrolledwithconsistentdosingappliedasneededandinaccordancewithdailyflow,withmorefrequentapplicationsduringheavyuseperiods.Theseexpectedoutcomespresentsignificantcostsavingsofpotentiallythousandsofdollarsamonthforcampsiteowners,whichincludescostofsludgepumpouts,odor-maskingagentsandleachfieldremediationservices.Inaddition,thereductionofnutrientlevelsintreatedwastewaterprovidesasignificantenvironmentalbenefitasthecampsiteislocatedinChesapeakeBayBasincatchmentarea.
