Sew Trendy Fashions &
Accessories for 18" DollsThe popularity of the -inch doll is due in large part,I believe, to the fact that young girls can identify withthem. They are made to look like modern girls. Somecompanies offer many choices, so you can buy a doll thattruly resembles its owner. And with a little imagination(and young girls have loads of that), the doll can havea personality and a life with activities, friends, school, celebrations and choresjust like her proud owner. Butto really make the connection, the dolls need clothes andaccessories that appeal to the girlscontemporary styles, colors and fabrics with a little bling here and there. So
that is what I have tried to do in this bookgive you manychoices for current designs to make a dolls wardrobe thatreflects its owners sense of style.
The fabrics and colors are suggestions. You can createmany great outfits from the patterns in this book by mixingthe separates and by using a variety of fabrics, colors andembellishments. I hope you enjoy making these designsyour very own!

Fabric SelectionKnits are very popular now for clothing, so anumber of the designs in this book feature knitfabrics. They are easy to cut and sew and most donot need a seam finish.
Small contemporary prints are most widelyavailable in woven cottons. Keep scale in mindwhen selecting a printuse smaller scale printsfor these small garments. Many of the designs callfor a fat quarter of fabric, which is simply a precut x 2-inch rectangle found in fabric stores, oftendisplayed with a number of coordinating fabrics, making it a breeze to select a coordinated look.
Straight of GrainStraight-of-grain arrows are given on most patternpieces. Pieces with these arrows should be placedon the fabric with the arrow equal-distance fromthe selvage or finished edge of the fabric (Figure ).
Fabrics With a NapSome fabrics have a raised surface called a nap. These fabrics feel different when rubbing yourhand back and forthwith the nap feels smoothand against the nap feels rough. Fur, corduroy andvelvet are fabrics with a nap.
When cutting fabric with a nap, pieces need to becut with the nap going in the same direction. Forexample, each sleeve should be cut with the napgoing in the same direction.

Knit fabrics stretch in all directions but more insome directions than others. Cut knits as if they hada nap with all pieces going in the same direction.
Faux fur can give a high-end look to your doll fash-ions. The following tips will make sewing with thisspecialty fabric easy.
Positioneachpatternpieceonthewrongside of the fabric and trace around pattern with afabric marker.
Whencutting, usesmallscissorstomakeshortclips on the fabric, keeping the point of thescissors close to the wrong side of the fabric. Goslowly so you clip as little of the fur as possible.
Useaballpointneedletoavoidpuncturingtheknit stitches of the fabric.
Thefurcanbeslippery.Useadditionalpinsasnecessary to hold pieces together.
Afterstitchingeachseam, takethetimetopullthe fur from the seam. Run your fingers over theseamtoloosenthefurfromtheseam.Usetheblunt end of a seam ripper or a toothpick to pickfur from seam.

Construction Tips
How to Use the Patterns: To use the patterns inthe book, trace pieces onto tissue paper, cut apartand pin tissue to fabric. Cut out on pattern lines, cutting through tissue and fabric. Alternately, youcan copy patterns onto cardstock, cut out and tracearound the patterns onto the fabric with a pencil oran air- or water-soluble pen. Be sure to transfer anynecessary markings. Also, many instructions say toCut 2 from fabric, reverse . If your fabric is foldedin half, with wrong sides together or right sidestogether, your one cut will automatically give youboth pieces. Otherwise, just flip the pattern overfor your second cut.
Seam Finishes: Seam finishes are only mentioned inthe instructions when a particular finish is called for. Some of the fabrics, such as denim, are too bulkyto fold under for a doubled hem, so the edgesare zigzag-stitched or serged to eliminate a fold. Please feel free to finish seams as desiredserging,
zigzag-stitching, using pinking shears or evenapplying seam sealant. Some fabrics, such as knitsand faux suede, do not require any seam finish.
Fasteners: Most of the garments in this book havesnap sets for fasteners. The male half of the snapis sewn to the inside of the garment on the rightside. The female half is sewn to the outside of thegarment on the left side, so the right overlaps theleft when closed. If you prefer, substitute hook-and-loop tape strips for the snaps.
Hems and Casings:The garments in the book allhave either a single-fold or a double-fold hem.Individual instructions will specify the width ofthe folds. Measure and press the first fold. If it is adouble hem, fold again, measuring from the foldededge. Edgestitch close to the final fold to finish. The same technique is true for the casings that will
hold elastic, but you will need to leave an openingto insert the elastic. The instructions will tell youwhere to leave an opening.
Gathering: Many of the garments in this book havegathered sleeves or skirts. To accomplish successfulgathers, begin by making two rows of longer-than-normal stitches inside the normal seam allowance, leaving long thread tails at each end (Figure 2).
With right sides together, pin section to be gath-ered to the appropriate garment section at each
end and at the center (Figure ).
Figure 2

Pull the bobbin threads at one end to gather. When half of the gathered section fits straightedgelength, secure bobbin threads by twisting arounda pin (Figure 4). Repeat for the second half of thesection. Pin securely along the seam line, adjusting
gathers evenly.
Stitch at seam line with gathered section on topand keeping gathers even so folds of fabric do notform while stitching (Figure ). Remove gatheringstitches after sewing seam.
Creating Waistline Casing: Create a casing forelastic by pressing fabric to the wrong side asdirected with individual pattern instructions. Pressfabric to the wrong side, again as directed in theinstructions with the pattern. Stitch close to the
edge of the first fold line (Figure ).
Thread the elastic through the casing using asafety pin or bodkin attached to one end of theelastic, making sure you dont pull the oppositeend of the elastic all the way through the casing.Pin elastic even with the ends of the casing and
stitch to secure in place (Figure ).
Catch elastic ends in seams when completing theseams of the garment.
One Last Note Before You BeginPlease remember when making these doll clothesthat the primary goal really is not to have a flaw-lessly constructed garment with every stitch in
perfect alignment! It is more important to have agarment that is securely made so it can sustain therigors of an enthusiastic costume change. Fasteneach seam by using a backstitch at the starting andending point and attach fasteners and embellish-ments securely. And, of course, choose fabrics andcolors and embellishments that appeal to the girlswho will be enjoying your creations!
