DoneincollaborationwithHealthProfessionsHighSchoolandtwoindustrypartners.

8thgradeMesascienceclassesfromtwodifferentmiddleschoolsparticipated,foratotalofapproximately75kids.

First,spentahalfdayatthehighschool;thehighschoolstudentswiththeteacherscreatedanddeliveredtheprogram.

FollowedbyahalfdayatShriners’Hospitalwithguestspeakersandinteractivetablesandlunch.

HEALTHPATHWAYSSUMMERINSTITUTE

PartnershipwithCAPandCRANE,regionalCCPTgrantees,andindustry.

Oneweek(36hours)instituteforhighschoolteacherstolearnaboutcommunitycollegehealthprogramsandindustry.

15teachersparticipated,eachearned2unitsofcollegecreditandastipend.

Teacherslearnedaboutthecommunitycollegesandtheirhealthprogramsinthemorning.

Gainedhands-onexperienceandexposuretovarioushealthcarecareersatindustrysitesintheafternoon.

Teachersdidafinalprojectdevelopingalessonplanandpresentingittotheothers.

  Placementissues:valueofcollaborationtoeasetransitiontopost-secondary.  Notteachingthemtolookatcollege,thenmajor,thencareer.Rather,itshouldbelookingatcareer,thenmajors,thencollegeswithprograms.

It was great to see the theme of “soft skills” consistency being expressed across all the sites.

Weeks2and3:   Studentstakepartinhospitalrotations.   Theyareplacedwithapreceptorateachstationandspendthedaywiththatindividual.

   PossibleRotations:CatheterLab,ER,PT/OT,Pulmonary,Women’sCenter,MICU,SICU,Pre/Post-OP,Endoscopy,Laboratory,Pharmacy,Radiology

   Studentinvolvementateachrotation:   Jobshadowing:

   Whatareproceduresandresponsibilitiesofthedepartment?   Tasks:

   Helpwithbasichospitalskills(makingbeds,movingequipment,holdingmaterials,etc.)
