AFirst-Timer’sExperienceataNationalConference By:KelleeFrancis
ThispastJune,IventuredoffintoNewOrleans,Louisianaandattendedmyfirst,everALAconference.Duringthisfive-dayexcursiontherewasmuchtobeoverwhelmedby,however,therewasalsomanyimportantthingstodiscover.
Weallknowthatattendingconferencesisagreatwayforinformationprofessionalstolearnaboutnewtechnologies,networkwithotherlibrarians,andstayup-to-dateonissuesfacingtheprofession.Conferencescanalsobeagreatdealoffun.Attendingyourfirstconference,however,especiallyifit’salargenationalconferencelikeonehostedbytheAmericanLibraryAssociationortheSpecialLibrariesAssociation,canbeadauntingprospect.Therearemanythingstothinkaboutwhenplanningtoattendaconference–whatyou’llneedtocarry,whattowear,howtoaffordconferencesasastudentoronanewlibrarian’ssalary.
Intermsofmakingaconferencemoreaffordableonagraduatestudentbudget,itgoeswithoutsayingthatifyourinstitutionprovidesassistancewithconferenceandtravelexpensesyoushouldtakeadvantageofit!Butifyouareliketherestofus,thereareanumberofwaystohelpdecreasewhatyouwillspendoutofyourownpocket.
Primarily,lookforgrantsandscholarshipsorworkprogramsthatwillprovidefreeorreducedconferenceregistrationfees.Lookaround!Youmayfindthatthereismoneyavailablefromlocalandstateassociations,yourgraduateprogram,andevengrantsavail-ablefromthevariousdivisions,roundtables,andspecialinterestgroupsofthenationalorganizations.
However,iffocusingontimespentattheactualconference,remembertomaketimeforsomedowntime;conferencescanbeoverwhelmingduetotherebeingsomuchtodoandsomanypeopletomeet.Youreallydon’twanttowearyourselfoutwithinthreehours.
Whenyougotothelargenationalconferencesyou’llfindshuttleservicesfromtheconventioncentertotheconferencehotels.Ifyouarestayinginahotelthatisnotontheshuttleline,staywhereyoucanwalktooneoftheconferencehotelsandpickuptheshuttle,orusepublictransportationtogettotheconventioncenter.

Another Student’s Perspective By Micah Vandegrift
ALAwasjustaboutexactlywhatIexpectedittobe.I’veattendedafewconfer-ences(FloridaLibraryAssociation,THATCamp,Webwise)soIwasfamiliarwiththeformat.WhatwasdifferentaboutALAweremygoals;Iwentforthefirsttimeasaprofessionalwithacareerfocusandalsotogetoutandmeetsomepeople.BeingthatIjustgraduated,itwasimportantformetoattendsomesessionsrelatedtomycareerinterestsandworkactivities.SinceI’mworkinginscholarlycommunication,IwenttoallthesessionsIcouldinthatarea,andlearnedquiteabitaboutthecurrentissuesandadvancementsthatwillbeusefultomeasIstartmycareer.
Ontheflipside,oneofthemostvaluablesessionsIattendedwastheunconfer-ence,whichisanunstructuredsessionunfoldingasaconversationbetweenallparticipants.Ireallyenjoyedhavingopendiscussionswithavarietyoffolks,andasidefromgoodinformationonprofessionallife,Ilearnedalotabouthowtotalkanddiscussasaprofessionallibrarian,askillthatweallshoulddevelop.Inadditiontothesessions,Ifoundincrediblevalueingettingoutofmyshell,andmeetingtonsofnewpeoplethroughsocialevents.I’devenarguethathalfofthepointofconferencesistogettogetherwithfolksandchat,discuss,share,aboutprofessionallifebutalsoaboutlifeandinterestsingeneral.Overall,thisALAhasgottenmeveryexcitedaboutparticipatinginthefieldinmanydiffer-entways,andIknowattendingand‘hacking’theconferencecircuitisonestepalongthatjourney.
MicahisgraduatefromFSUSLISandanearlycareerinformationprofessionalwithamultidisciplinarybackground.Currently,heisworkingpart-time,whilespendinghisnightsthinkingandreadingabouttheintersectionofarts,technologyandculture.
KelleeFrancisisaGraduateAssistantfortheFloridaStateUniversity,StrozierLibrary.SheisinherfourthsemesterandwillbeworkingasanArchiveAssistantwiththeBureauofNaturalandCulturalResourcesattheFloridaDepartmentofEnvironmentalProtection.

First Time ALA Con-ference Continued...
WhatIlearnedatmyFirstProfessionalConference(inthatcase,ALA)thatIchangedLATER(after12+professionalconferencesthatincludesALA,SLA,FLA,ComputersinLibraries)-PamDoffek
MyfirstprofessionalconferencewasAirForceLibrariansWorkshop(3days)priortoALAin1993.IattendedthefullALAAnnualconferencelater,whichcoincidentallywasinNewOrleans.Ihadbeenalibrarianfor6monthsbythen,mybossdidn’twanttogoandIhadAL-WAYSbeenaboutthe“moreexperiencesareneverbad”frameofmind.

Weapon of Choice: The Dewey Decimal System
Mission: To promote and celebrate the written word.
Accomplishments: Director of Library Programming and the Washington Center for the Book at the Se-attle Public Library. Nancy is best known for the, “If All Seattle Read The Same Book” project. This idea of one city reading the same book at the same time has been imitated in cities around the world. She is a book reviewer for the Seattle Times, Booklist, Library Journal, KUOW-FM Seattle, and KWGS-FM Tulsa.
Awards: 2003 Washington Humanities Award, 2001 Allie Beth Martin Award from the American Library Association, 1998 Library Journal’s Fiction Reviewerof the Year.
Education: Masters Degree in Library Sciences from the University of Michigan.
Interesting Fact: Decided to become a librarian at the age of 10.

Dr.Kasmystudentsknowmenow—wasnotDr.Kin1988.IwasChristieKoontzseekingherPhD--(awarded1990.)IdecidedtoattendmyfirstALAasitwasbeingheldinNewOrleans,andwas,andgettoknowfolksintheprofessionIwouldsurelynowbeapartoflongterm.
Igotthegianttomeinthemail(theALAprogram)—andrapidlywentthroughitcirclingmarketingprograms—thetopicwasmyinterestthenandremainssonow.Additionally,aprofessorhadmentionedthatagreatwayto‘gettoknowALA’wastoattendacommitteemeeting.Thesewereandareallopen‘tothepublic.’IcircledonerelatedtomarketingthatwassponsoredbyPLA.Iidentifiedthewhereandwhenandmadethatmeetingapriority.ItwasvaluableIdid.
Ialsoquicklyrealizedthatprogramsandcommitteemeetingscollidedwithoneanotherandthetimingmadeitimpossibleto‘doitall.’Butexcitedaboutthejourneyandevent—Iputtheprogramguideinmybagandheadedoff—NewOrleansorbust.Iknewfewgoing—sosettledonahotelanddecidedtoabsorbasmuchaspossible.
Afterthreeheateddays(yesrealHEAT)IwenttoalltheprogramsIcould.IheardJesseJacksonandsawlibrariansrisetotheirfeetscreamingforaformofdemocracyIidentifiedwith.Icollectedthreemillionpostersandgadgets(Istillcannotstopdoingthis.)IpurchasedmyfirstsignedCaldecott—andhadtheartistsignittoKatelynandThomas(mychildrenthenages3and5.)
Iattendedthecommitteemeetingonthefourthdayandsharedmyresearchonlibrarylocationwithonemember.Hisname,nowlosttome—stated—“yourworkwillmakeadifference—contactmewhenyouwouldliketopresentaprogramonthis.”Wellin1991or1992inAtlantaatALA—Idid.Theresponsetomytheoriesonlocationoflibraryfacili-tieschangedmyprofessionallifethroughresearchandfundingstreamsthatwouldlastfordecadesandIcontinuedtosharethisresearchandworkalmosteveryyearatALA,IFLAandotherprofessionalmeetings.ThelastyearforALAwas2009,withWadeBishopthenseekinghisPhDfromFSU.Ourtopic--libraryclosure---andsoitgoes—
ThisyearIwentwithmanyofyou.IamnowonthefacultyatSLISandasALAStudentChapterAdvisor—Iassumeadifferentroleandperhapsserveasmentorandguideandcheer-leaderforyourjourneyandexposuretoprofessionalnetworkingandwelltheflatwonderofsuchalargeorganization.Myadvice?Neverbesatisfiedbeingintheaudience—thestageisalwaysbetter—shareyourworkandwhoyouare—participate—beinvolved—itisenduringandchallenging.
