ON THE COVER: Bob Mortensoncompeted in the Healey Hillclimb inhis 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder.
I spent a boring day at Healey Hillclimb XI at AftonAlps. Since I was a corner worker, this was a goodthing. No burning cars, no ambulances, no deer inwindshields. And especially no bruised cornerworkers.
As a corner worker, I also got to see how well organizedthese Tom Hazen/Healey Club events are. Tom takes everyprecaution possible to avoid incidents. All the corner workers have to chimein before the course goes live. The consequences for rule violations are laidout ahead of time and impartially applied. Several drivers were put on doublesecret probation for nicking a cone on the way up the hill. Despite the “doublesecret” nomenclature, they were warned at the top of the hill that if ithappened again they were done for the day. Only one or two failed to heedthe warning.
Another way to end your hillclimbing day early is to go off the pavement.Tom’s mnemonic for this rule is, “Off the track, don’t come back.” Thishappened to me once at Afton in the Citroen 2CV I used to own. It wasembarrassing — not so much for being black-flagged but for how stupid I feltgoing off the track in slow motion and narrowly missing that light pole.Sometimes neither my reactions nor my car’s are what I delude myself intothinking they are.
So as I stood by corner 2 in the morning and corner 4 in the afternoon, Isometimes found myself worrying whether some of the drivers were asdelusional as I was a few years ago. Driving can be dangerous, even if you’reproceeding at Tom’s recommended 7/10ths. This helped relieve the boredomand it was exciting to see, feel and hear that ’68 Camaro pounding up the hill.
One thing I did notice was that the fast drivers, including the Camaro’sdriver, were very smooth. No wasted motions, no unnecessary theatrics, justthe quickest route from here to there. It is unfortunately true that your7/10ths may be my 11/10ths. Maybe I’ll do some more corner work this year.

Dear Healey Hillclimb Drivers, Corner Workers, Hot Flag Girls,
and Fans:
Thanks for a fabulous Healey Hillclimb XI at Afton Alps! I need to
begin by re-thanking all the great people who made the day such
a success:
Terry Tobin who saved my butt by hauling the cones to and from Afton, bringingthe bag o' helmets, working the entry gate much of the day, and supervising cleanup. Alex Donaldson who also saved my butt by hauling huge amounts of equipmentand supplies out to Afton on Friday, helping me set up cones for several hoursFriday afternoon, working finish line timing all day, then hauling a trailer full ofequipment out of Afton yesterday afternoon. Jeremy Fohrenkamm who stopped byon Friday with a gas-powered leaf blower to clear the course.
Corner workers: Barb Waurzyniak, Ash "The Hammer" Drigout, Anna Bananas,Ryan Thompson (who handled the "lonely lunch" job with grace), Brian Bartels,Mel Turcanik, Bill Lozito, Dick Mathews, Suzanne Willodson, Greg Willodson,Don Gettinger, Andy Lindberg, Geoff Rossi, Gary Wetzel, and Greg Lauser.
Extra special thanks to the amazing hot flag girls Ariel, Eileen, Jes, Suzanne, and myvery own nieces Madison and Genelise! You all make the starting line extra fun forthe starter! And thanks to everyone else who helped but I'm too tired to rememberright now.
47 driver/car combinations made a total of 287 starts. Drivers who stayed all daywere able to take NINE runs each! My special thanks to Alex Donaldson forworking the finish line all day, helped by Susan Willodson in the morning and DonGettinger in the afternoon, managing two timing sheets, simultaneously timing twocars on the course with just stopwatches, pens, and paper. You are "top o' the hill"tops!

Congratulations to Matt Cramer who takes home "FastestTime of Day" honors. Matt tore up the hill in his 2005Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII MR clocking a time of 54.13. AndMatt was a volunteer worker as well. I guess it pays tovolunteer at these events! Actually I was amazed his timeswere so fast, considering how slowly he launched off thestarting line. He almost killed his engine once! Nice job,Hollywood.
Amazingly, more than 20 drivers turned in their fastest timeon their last run of the day. Way to improve, people!
My thanks again to everyone who showed up, pitched in, andsmiled back at me all day. I have the time of my life runningthese events, and I love you all dearly.
Yours in Speed,Tom
P.S. Attention vintage (1979 and older) car drivers: We stillhave openings for the new Waumandee Hillclimb inSeptember. See the flyer in this month’s Monthly.

Eight vintage foreign cars (and a few modern behemoths)showed up at the Cottage View Drive-In on Friday evening.Five of the cars were Triumphs (one TR3, one TR6, one TR8,and two Spitfires), one was a Citroen 2CV, one was a LotusElan, and there was also a Miata just sneaking into thevintage class. The movie (Ice Age Umpteen) stunk butotherwise everyone seemed to have a good time visiting, looking under bonnets, and munching on goodies. Will theCottage View be open next year? There’s a grass-rootseffort to keep out Wal-Mart. We’ll see who wins.

An eclectic mixture of cars, people and food gathered Sunday afternoonin St. Paul’s Cherokee Park. The temperature was tolerable and thehumidity wasn’t bad either. The only weather-related problem was thatpeople had to keep moving their lawn chairs to stay in the shade. This, however, was a good thing because while you were talking to the ownerof a Lotus Elan coupe, after the shade scramble you were discussing a1952 DeSoto. Who and what will be there at the next picnic on August26? Come over and find out.
