About Doris Lessing• Grew up in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in Africa• British novelist, poet, playwright, librettist,

biographer and short story writer.• Lessing was the eleventh woman and the oldest

person ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2007

Symbol• Stands for something beyond itself• May be person, place, object, or activity

Setting as Symbol
