Securing Property Rights with Open

Source

What we doProvide an innovative, alternative model for the collection and management of ownership, occupancy and spatial data in order to simplify, modernize and expedite the documentation of property rights in places where they do not exist today.

Great, but what exactly is ‘land tenure?’Land tenure is the relationship, whether legally or customarily, among people, as individuals or groups, with respect to land. It defines how access is granted to rights to use, control, and transfer land, as well as associated responsibilities and restraints.

In simple termsLand tenure systems determine who can use what resources for how long, and under what conditions.

It’s not just about land“Land” includes other natural resources like water, grazing, agricultural,

right of way, minerals and forests.

Facts about the state of land tenure rights•80% of the world does not have secure land tenure rights.

•1.2 billion people living in urban slums do not have the rights to where they live.

•Documenting and digitizing property rights is a slow and difficult process.

•Solutions are expensive and not sustainable.

•Places with the least secure property rights are the most often exploited.

We believe there is a better way

The data tools

The flexibility of the ODK ecosystem means that each project in Cadasta can have a customized survey that captures the context-sensitive information on a location by location basis.

The FormHub and ONA APIs extract JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) files to be loaded into the Cadasta Ingestion Engine. A script will run to find and export newly uploaded files on a regular basis thru the API.

Our data structureThe Cadasta Database is a PostGreSQL data store that houses the schema that defines the core logic of the Cadasta Platform. The Cadasta database schema contains tables to store information about parcels, parcel history, surveys, relationships, relationship history and media.

Its not as simple as just collecting data. We must put people before data. That includes enabling informed consent and privacy protection.

Open data v. privacy

Community is key to sustainabilityWe share learning, empower communities and actively contribute to open source projects.

The Cadasta Community• Developers• Technologists• Geospatial nerds

• Community-based NGO’s• Donor organizations• Governmental land agencies
