SECTION 3.6USING PERPENDICULAR AND PARALLEL LINES

LEARNING TARGETS:1. Students will be able to

construct parallel and perpendicular lines with a compass and straightedge.

2. Students will be able to use the parallel and perpendicular postulate.

VOCABULARY1. Construction2. Parallel3. Perpendicular

Vocabulary: CONSTRUCTION:

A geometric drawing that uses a limited set of tools, usually a compass and a straightedge (a ruler without marks)

You cannot “measure” with a protractor or ruler when making constructions.

Constructing Parallel Line:

Vocabulary:

PARALLEL POSTULATE If there is a line and a point not on the line, then there is exactly one line through the point parallel to the given line.

Vocabulary:

PERPENDICULAR POSTULATE: If there is a line and a point not

on the line, then there is exactly one line through the point perpendicular to the given line.

THEOREM: THEOREM 3.11:

If two lines are parallel to the same line, then they are parallel to each other.

If a || b and b || c, the a || c

THEOREM: THEOREM 3.12:

In a plane, if two lines are perpendicular to the same line, then they are parallel to each other.

If f and f e, the d || e
