Lunch facilitiesIndoor facilities can be booked in advance. There is also a covered picnic area next to HMS Victory and other outdoor seating areas around the site.
Health and safetyThe National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth and HMS Victory have comprehensive codes of practice and policies covering Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Risk Assessments and First Aid. Copies are available on request.

Preliminary visitsWe strongly advise a preliminary visit in order to familiarise yourself with the site and complete risk assessment paperwork. Preliminary visits are free of charge but school identification (such as a headed paper) is required. Please speak to the Learning Team to arrange this before your visit.
CancellationsIf you need to cancel your booking please do so 21 working days prior to your visit. Unfortunately, you will incur charges if you do not give the required notice.

Getting herePlease plan your journey to ensure you arrive 15 minutes before the start of your workshop or tour. Wherever possible, we will try to accommodate your group if you arrive late. However, it may not always be possible to reschedule a missed session. HMS Victory, HMS M33 and the National Museum of the Royal Navy are located at the far end of the Historic Dockyard. There is a drop-off/pick up point at The Hard and coach facilities provided by Portsmouth City Council can be booked for £7.50.

HMS M33 Science challengeTarget Group: KS3
Curriculum links: STEM
Price: Discovery Visit £4 per student + £80 per 2 hour workshop for up to 30 people
Discover the science behind HMS M33 from the unique design and construction to discovering how the crew communicated at sea. Can science help explain how the ship managed to move in shallow waters? How was the ship designed for combat? Students will uncover the answers using scientific enquiry to test and evaluate their findings.
Life at Sea – Kitbag stories Target group: KS3
Curriculum links: History (World War 1)
Price: Discovery Visit £4 per student + £50 per 1 hour workshop for up to 30 people
Using our unique, multimedia HMS M33 kitbags, students investigate individual crew members and roles, handle artefacts and carry out investigative activities to learn about life on board. They then reflect on their findings to present an individual case study to the rest of the class.
Sailor Heroes – First World War Target group: KS3 & 4
Curriculum links: History
Price: Discovery Visit £4 per student + £50 per 1 hour workshop for up to 30 people
Students explore and debate modern-day ideas surrounding heroism and combat. Through a variety of interactive activities focusing on artefacts, oral histories and primary sources linked to the First World War students work together to research and present their findings.
War and Peace – Portsmouth Dockyard 1914-1945 Study Day Target group: KS4 & 5
Curriculum links: History
Price: £8 per student per day for up to 30 people
Explore the history of the Royal Navy, the Dockyard and the local area from 1914 – 1945. What impact did the two world wars have on Portsmouth? What social, cultural and technological changes took place during this period? Students will have the opportunity to visit HMS M33, tour HMS – Hear my Story gallery and access archives related to both World Wars. In groups they then conduct case study investigations, examining different types of primary evidence before presenting their findings.
Tale of Two Ships Target group: KS3
Curriculum links: History, STEM
Price: Discovery Visit £6.50 per student + £50 per 1 hour workshop for up to 30 people
From Trafalgar to World War 1! Inspire your class with this unique opportunity to visit two ships. Students will compare and contrast diet and living conditions for the crews as well as investigate how technology changed life on board. They will also find out about children’s roles in the Royal Navy and times of war.

Our learning programme offers fun and informative workshops for every key stage on a variety of subjects and interests.
We have activities that bring to life the Royal Navy’s rich history and heritage through our exciting collections and amazing ships.
There are old favourites plus the exciting new blockbuster exhibition 36 Hours: Jutland 1916, The Battle That Won The War with its amazing interactives. Witness the scale of the greatest sea battle and see the daunting view from the bridge of HMS Lion. Discover how a trinket belonging to Lord Nelson found its way to the Battle of Jutland. Reflect on the human cost, meet the men and share their stories.
We are sure that you will find something to help you make the most of your visit.

Discovery Visits
A Discovery Visit is a teacher-led, self-guided visit to the National Museum of the Royal Navy, HMS Victory or HMS M33. Trails, activity sheets and resources are available to assist with your visit and Discovery Visits can be combined with one or more workshops.
The hands-on galleries at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, including the HMS – Hear My Story exhibition, span 400 years of history with fascinating objects, audio-visuals and computer interactives. With key themes including exploration, the sailing navy, Nelson, Trafalgar, the two World Wars, science, design and technology, a visit will help develop key skills suitable for a variety of learning styles across the curriculum.
Special education needs and access provisionThe Museum and Learning Centre is fully accessible to wheelchair users including a lift and toilets in every gallery. One of the decks of HMS Victory is also accessible with a handling activity and virtual tour available to enhance visits. For HMS M33 there is lift access down to the viewing platform and one of the decks is fully accessible. The mess area, where some of our workshops take place, is not unfortunately accessible to wheelchairs but we can arrange an alternative, fully accessible space if required – just let us know at the time of booking. Many of our workshops involve handling objects and are suitable for pupils with special educational needs. Touch tours and Audio Descriptive tours are also available. Wheelchairs, magnifying glasses and large print text can also be arranged in advance.

HMS Victory guided toursDuring the off-peak season guided tours are included in the Discovery Visit but must be booked in advance. Due to high visitor numbers in the peak season a free-flow system operates and these tours are not available. To avoid disappointment please contact us for information on dates for the guided tours.

Slavery through objects Target group: KS3
Curriculum links: RE (Ethics), History
Price: Discovery Visit £4 per student + £50 per 1 hour workshop for up to 35 people
This session allows students to explore and debate the wider issues and human stories behind slavery. Using artefacts and primary sources, students work together to explore the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the Royal Navy’s role in ending it.
HMS Victory – History in evidence Target group: KS3 & 4

Price: Discovery Visit £4 per student + £80 per half day for up to 30 people
Students have a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes and access the museum archives linked to HMS Victory, Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. Through a series of investigative activities focused around these primary sources students will discover more about the ship, the battle and the men who served on board.

New for July 2017 Get Ready for Secondary!Venue: Royal Marines Museum
Target group: Key Stage 2 (year 6) and Key Stage 3 (year 7)
Curriculum links: Secondary school transition
Price: £4 per pupil
Get Ready for Secondary is aimed at Years 6 and 7 as they transition to secondary school. Students take part in a Royal Marines immersive experience aimed at developing confidence and building team working, communication and problem solving skills. Activities include taking part in a drill session, dressing up as a Royal Marine and working together in a Commando Challenge on the assault course.
