NEWSLETTER –15th March 2019
Great fun was had by everyone this science week.
Thank you to everyone who came along today – your feedback was invaluable. We will use
this information to making this an even better school for all our families.
Thank you for your generosity in giving to this charity – we raised £155.00
We all had great fun in assembly, hearing all the jokes!
SCIENCE QUESTION OF THE WEEK
A teddy bear, a dog and a tree. Which one is the odd one out and why?
The children can explore the question in any way they would like.

FOREST SCHOOL SPRINGS BACK
Forest school restarted this week with Yellow and Purple classes managing to avoid the bad weather. A
walk around the reserve saw everyone spotting the first signs of Spring and the birds were 'helped' by
the children making birds nests and filling them with 'wool' worms. Everyone got 'hands on' with some
frogspawn and watched a newt too.
LOCAL FREE CYCLE EVENTS
Lewisham Cyclists are holding some local free cycle events this Spring. The first event will be free bike
checks at Crofton Park library on Saturday 23 March from 2pm to 5pm. It is first come, first served and
they will check your brakes, oil the chain and get any of your family's bikes up and running smoothly
for Spring.
Local family bike rides also run by Lewisham Cyclists will be starting on Saturday 7 April at 10am at
Eddystone Road SE4. They will be riding to Mayow Park but you don't have to do the whole ride! Start
and then bail out where ever you need to!
TREE PLANTING AT BLYTHE HILL FIELDS THIS WEEKEND
The Friends of Blythe Hill are holding a tree planting session at Blythe Hill this Saturday at 10am. Why
not go along and help add more trees to our local park, maybe do a bit of litter picking too!
CLEAN TEETH FOR THE FOODBANK
We are still collecting toothbrushes and toothpaste for Lewisham Foodbank. Any toothpaste or
toothbrush from any shop would be great so please donate if you can. Please put your donation
into the big white box next to the school office.

The children have enjoyed a fun and busy science week!
Year 1 and 2 took part in a Dry Ice Workshop where they explored the properties of dry ice and how it
changes state.
A huge thank you to Lee Norris and his students (Daniel’s father from Green class) for visiting Year 1 with
a selection of animals for them to learn about and hold.
Reception became inventors in a workshop where they learned all about how levers and catapults work.
Nursery experimented with how colours mix in different liquids.
And last but not least we have loved watching the ducklings hatch and grow over the last two weeks. They
will be greatly missed!
Reception Weekly Email
Please continue to send in junk modelling resources. We would love
cardboard boxes and kitchen rolls in particular. Thank you!

What we will be doing in school
How you can help at home
Topic – Amazing Eggs
This week we will be talking about
dinosaur habitats and describing where
they used to live.
We will be using inspiration from the
book ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ to
create our own dinosaur hunt story
maps. We will use drama to re-enact
the stories we make.
Find out about different animals and their
habitats today e.g. Arctic regions, deserts,
rainforests, oceans, ponds.
Maths
We will be working on measuring and
comparing lengths and heights. We
will measure the length and height of
dinosaurs, in the playground!
Measure the heights of the people in your
family using string or building blocks (non-
standard units of measurement). Compare
lengths of objects around the house. Order
shoes from longest to shortest/ biggest to
smallest.
Phonics and tricky words
New sound ‘ar’
Revising: oo, oo, ear, ai, oi, oa.
We will be practising hearing and
saying the sounds in words
(segmenting) using the sounds we have
learnt so far. e.g. ‘boat’ and ‘dear’ and
begin to say sounds and blend to read
words.
Sounds taught so far: c, o, a, d, g, f, s,
e, l, i, t, u, y, j, r, n, m, p, h, b, k, v, w, x,
z, qu, ll, ss, ff, zz, sh, ch, th, ck, oo, oo,
ee, or, ng, ai, oi, oa, ear.
Tricky words taught so far: the, to, I,
was, no, go, me, my, he, be, like, have,
we, some, they, all, she, live, come.
Other high frequency words taught so
far: yes, from, this, that, then, dear,
from, went.
Look for the new letters in their reading
books, can they say the sound? Can they begin
to blend letters to read simple words? E.g. “f-
l-oa-t = float”, “b-ear-d = beard”
Try to spot the tricky words we’ve taught in
books that you are reading. Can they spell
them out e.g. with magnetic letters.
Practise writing the letters taught so far.
Please ensure they are practising the correct
letter formation and orientation.
We welcome any writing done at home
brought in to share with the class. When
writing at home, please encourage your child
to leave spaces in between their words.
