Photosynthesis

The life process carried out in chloroplasts within some plant cells:– Energy from light is used to

make food molecules (Glucose - C6H12O6)

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis

Stoma (stomata-plural)

Openings in the underside epidermis of a green leaf that allow for Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Oxygen(O2) and water vapor to enter and exit the leaf

Stoma (stomata)

Guard Cell(s)

Two small leaf cells on each side of the stoma that open and close the stoma

Reactant

In a chemical equation these are the chemicals that begin the process or what goes in to the equation6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Product

In a chemical equation these are the chemicals that end the process or what comes out of the equation6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2

Chemical Bond

The result of a chemical reaction when two reactants combine chemically to form new products

Lab TimeLab Time

Now it is time to introduce the new lab.

Pease open your Green lab guides to page 65

Read the introduction silently as I read it aloud

Slides for lab activity

What do Plants need for Photosynthesis?– Sunlight– Chlorophyll– Water H2O

– Carbon Dioxide CO2

Slides for lab activity

How do you think plants get the things for photosynthesis?– Chloroplasts in Leaves

Absorbs sun light– Roots

Water in– Stoma

CO2 in, O2 out through the underside of the leaf. Water Vapor out

Photosynthesis

Essential Learnings

Organisms that perform photosynthesis are called producers because they make or produce their own food.

Consumers and Decomposers make up everything else

Essential Learnings

Photosynthesis is the process in which producers make food by using light energy, carbon dioxide and water

Essential Learnings

Chlorophyll is a green colored chemical inside chloroplasts that allows for the process of photosynthesis to take place

Chloroplasts must be present in the producer to perform photosynthesis

Essential Learnings

Carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) are the raw materials which plants must obtain from the environment for photosynthesis

Essential Learnings

To obtain materials needed for photosynthesis, plants have roots and stems to absorb water, leaves containing chloroplasts to collect light and stomata on the underside of each leaf to allow for the exchange of gases

Essential Learnings

The stomata located on the underside of the leaf’s epidermis is controlled by guard cells which open and close each stoma to allow for the exchange of carbon dioxide (in) and oxygen and water vapor (out)

Essential Learnings

Plants produce sugar called glucose for food and oxygen as bi-product during photosynthesis

Essential Learnings

First level/primary Consumers called Herbivores eat the plants to get energy from the glucose stored inside the plant.– Ex. Insect

Essential Learnings

Secondary consumers called Carnivores eat the Herbivores– Fish

Third-level or Tertiary consumers called Omnivores eat everything to get their energy– Bear

Essential Learnings

Decomposers break down the waste products and dead organisms and return the nutrients to the soil
