• Scientific notation is used to more clearly express either very large or very small numbers.

• In scientific notation a number is expressed in the form • x X 10n.

• • x – greater than 1 but less than 10• 10n is a power of 10.

• 1. To determine the value of x move the decimal place in the number so that only 1 non-zero digit is to the left of the decimal point.

2. To determine the value of the exponent n count the number of places the decimal point moves to the left or right. If the decimal point moves to the right express n as a negative exponent. If the decimal point moves to the left, express the n as a positive exponent.

3. Use the values you have determined for x and n to express the number in the form

x X 10n.
