SAVING THE DYING DEAD SEA

Lexia Chadwick22 April 2014

The Uniqueness of the Dead Sea

• Lowest Point on earth at 427 meters below sea level

• Density of 1.24 kg/L– which is significantly greater than the density of

water found in the ocean– Makes Flotation easy

• 8.6 times saltier than the ocean

There are major issues, some deadly

Major Sink Holes are being created• More than 1,000 over last 15

years• Collapse without warning and

almost always deadly if fallen into

• Sink holes have already damaged infrastructure

New Ideas bring New Solutions

The most prominent Solution is Red-Dead Project

• Will build a series of pipelines, canals, tunnels, and desalination plants that would bring water about 180 km from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea

• Requires cooperation between Israeli, Palestinian, and Jordanian authorities

• Concerns about project’s true purpose- aiding the the Jordanian water shortage?

Can the Dead Sea be saved?

Only time will tell. Thank you for your time!
